I have Tourettes Syndrome... Two hundred years ago I would've been burned at the stake for being a witch!

People with mental illnesses were referred to as witches, heretics, sorcerers, black magicians, possessed, pagans, etc. Whatever they fancied calling us that sounded evil and within our control! lol... It was important to place blame on the person for the behavior.

a lot of the time it was called "being a witch" or "heretic" etc. - people with disorders were regularly tortured and killed, heck, still are

It was called hysteria as it applied to women. This is particularly true for the nineteenth century.
