i don't cut. but, my best friend of twelve years has been doing it for about a year.

she has a pretty crazy life. her mother and father are drug addicts, her [other] friends are out drinking and partying and giving her a bad influence, and most of the guys she have gone out with have treated her like absolute filth.

i try talking to her, but it seems as if that only works sometimes.

she's told me before that when she cuts, it feels as if she's slicing away the problem. she also says that focusing on the pain makes her forget about all of the bad things in the world that are rearing their ugly faces at her.

and when she can't find a razorblade, she burns herself with a cigarette.

so, there was my input. not from personal experience, but from sort of "dealing" with it.

Sometimes cutting aleviates the pain they are feeling on the inside, sometimes they just want to know they are still alive, sometimes it's a form of self punishment...lots of reasons. A cry or help, sometimes they really just want to die...I have before to feel something and also to punish myself.

I used to cut myself....I was put on anti depressents that made me very suicidal and the only way to make the suicidal thoughts go away was to cut myself....after I got off of them the suicidal thoughts wenta away but I was still cutting myself because it became an addiction....that's why I used to do it, but with the help of God and my friend I was able to get over it....now I just have to live with disgusting scars

I've recently become a mental health counselor but I have not had to deal with this issue directly yet. I think some of my classmates did deal with "cutters" during their internships. If I had to guess, I would be tempted to hypothesize that there could be something neurological going on with "cutters"... that the individual did not quite feel sensations normally and was trying to force themself to feel a sensation... in much the same way as autistic individuals sometimes bang their heads or otherwise self stimulate.

The common answer is that "it helps them alleviate pain inside" but I do not quite grasp how that works. Somehow physical pain might make some people feel better emotionally, but I've heard that best described by athletes who push themselves to the limit so they are too tired and sore to feel bad anymore... I don't know if that applies to cutters.

Some people just claim the cutters are seeking attention-- but I don't know if that tells us much unless the cutter has been so thoroughly ignored they will do anything, even inflict self harm, to get a reaction out of someone.
