Panic attacks ?!

Question: iam a 28yr old woman i have a history of depression and anxiety on and off since my son was born 7 years ago. i have been off prozac for a few years now and only get a few depressed days but the anxiety seems to be an ongoing problem recently i have been suffering with the following feeling to hot, feeling short of breath, feeling like my throat is too tight and worst of all feeling really faint like i am about to pass out. these symptoms can happen at home but more so if i am in shops especially if they are hot are these panic attacks what i do know is they are getting more frequent. i have been back and forth to the doctor who doesn't really do much i had to ask to be referred to behaviour therapy he just trys to reassure me that he thinks its anxiety and i will be ok. i am now taking beta blockers which i started 2 weeks ago but they do not seem to be helping any ideas would be gratefully received xx

Ive suffered from the same problem and have returned to complete recovery. Im certain you can too.

You're right to look for advice independent of your doctor because this problem is NOT OK and its not right that you continue suffering.

I got better by doing the following:
* Having a few sessions with a good hypnotherapist
* Stopped drinking carbonated drinks (supposedly, the bubbles are like fuel on the flames of anxiety)
* Reduced my intake of caffiene (this helped MASSIVELY)
* Did a little meditation
* Ate the right nutritional foods
* Made sure I got at least 8hrs sleep

Most people will recommend that you exercise but I didnt!

Good luck. Im sending positive thoughts your way x

The first time the doctor told me I had panic attacks I told him I couldn't be because I am too strong willed to let anything like that take over. I was wrong and it is a awful diease that people really don't realize unless live it. You will just have to try different meds till one works for you. I wish I could tell you there is a cure but you don't know when this is sneaking upon you before you are in a full blown panic attack. I wish you the bravery of a soldier to deal with this at such a young age.

Please find a psychotherapist who has empathy. You need medication to control these panic attacks, especially if you do not know what the triggers are. If not you will suffer needlessly. Valium changed my entire life but I am not the norm and it is addictive and there are newer medications that might work better for u. Good luck.

ok so it sounds like you just have anxiety... because panic attacks are horrible. i used to think i had panic attacks when they were just anxiety until i actually had a panic attack. you feel like youre gonna die for some reason, start running around like a chicken with your head cut off, you choke up on your spit or nothing and are gasping for air, cant think whatsoever. i didnt feel faint at all. if what you experienced was in extremes like this then they are probably panic attacks.

way to avoid them... relax, avoid stress. while youre having one stop and just breathe remind yourself youre not going to die. it reallly works.

I had panic attacks on and off for years. I dont get them anymore. You have t learn to control them. If you feel one coming on do whatever you can to take your mind off it, breathe deeply, make yourself think of something pleasant. I really feel for you as it is a vile experience, you think you are dying, but you wont I promise you, and they will get better. Also just do things and go places that you are comfortable in, and then when you are ok there go a little further. Also yoga is good. Dont fight them just try and push them sideways. Good luck poppet you WILL be fine.

Do you have the charity MIND in your area? They do an anxiety management course and also relaxation classes. Also for your GP to brush you off and say you'll be okay doesn't help. Ask about citalopram, it helps with anxiety. I'm on it at the moment and it has helped. The department of health have recommended self help books and there's one on anxiety. Ask your GP as they can be prescribed. There are also audio books that can also be prescribed. Hope this has helped x
