It's all in your head.
This sounds stupid, but I've tried it and it works - As well as practicing your actual presentation you also need to prepare yourself for practicing in front of this huge croud. Start with your family - do it in front of them. If you have time, practice infront of your class or a big group of friends, and when you're about to face the 1200 people, tell yourself you are not afraid. Thinking powerful thoughts gets rid of the nerves. eg: "I rule over everyone in this hall; I am going to win; I'm not scared." When you go on, stand up striaght and pretend you're someone high and important - BIG SMILES! Pretend noone is watching you, and you're all alone in your bedroom or it's just you and your mum.
Whatever you do, don't get out of the "zone" before or during the time you are infront of the croud - I used to try and distract myself before I went on stage for a piano performance. "Hmm, I wonder what's for dinner. I can't wait till this is over. I think I'm going to go and buy an ice cream after this to celebrate!"
- This is BAD! (lol) Focus on what's happening right now, think about your presentation and only your presentation. Don't let anyone in the audience put you off, don't look in the eye anyone you don't trust or know well, and if anything goes wrong, keeping smiling and keep going.
If your teacher made you do it then obviously he/she thinks you have potential. Good luck!

imagine everyone in their underwear

I am shy and get freaked out when performing infront of alot of people I just look strait ahed or at an object or something and not look at the audience like i'm just performing alone in my bedroom so i can feel confident and not think about being watched. Also having a lollie or something to sweet to sooth you from being nervous helps before a performance.

first they are there to see what you have to present as well as everyone else. they are on your time. just smile, talk slow, and make a lot of eye contact. practice a lot. Also try and have a friend or someone close sit in the front part of the hall and tune everyone else out. just pretend that you are presenting what ever it is to that one person.
just remember to talk slow a lot of people will talk fast when they are nervous. if you know what you are presenting there is nothing you need to be nervous about. good luck i hope some of this helps.

pretend the people are fake - like you are doing this in front of just your teacher for a grade. practice what you will do until you have it perfect and don't make eye contact with anyone. if you wear glasses to see far, don't wear them. otherwise don't focus on the people and like I said - pretend they don't actually exist. a little nervousness will help with your energy level in a good way. good luck.

Just try and remain calm and composed and take deep breaths before the commencement of the presentation or stare at the back wall. Try not to focus at the people but rather the back wall.
It works for me and eventually when you are adjusted turn around and give quick glances at the audience for eye contact.

wow , really great tips man.

"imagine everyone in their underwear"

I think this is good idea , if you think then everyone is in their underwear , you will not be afraid and not get stress also .good idea. sonshon
