Why does it seem so many more people are depressed?!

Question: It just seems every where you turn everyone is suffering from some type depression. The stats say about 1/3 of people in our nation are experiencing some form. However, from what I can see, it is more like 2/3 experience depression.

Also, do you believe alll of the medications and psychiatrist are really helping anyone? If you are suffering from any type of mental illness or depression, what do you think society could do to help you and the many others who are suffering?

I too believe that there are many more depressed people than we realize. And there are as many reasons as there are people. It seems so many are under tremdendous pressure from family and society. We live in an imperfect world where we are expected to be perfect.

People are struggling to survive financially and yet they refuse to live within there means. Before all this credit was available people had to live within thier means but the govenment is handing it out on a sliver platter and most cannot afford to take it and when they do and lose it all, it stresses the entire economy. There is so much tension and hate in the world. More than ever before. Much of that is caused by either jealously of ignoramce.

All of these thing combined, along with the "in thing" for everyone to have a "shrink" just makes it worse. Now everytime someone feels a bit discouraged or down, the doctors are prescribing anit-depressant and anit-anxiety
medications. Many family doctors are even prescribing these medicines to children and parents are giving it to them instead of working and helping their children.

I am not sure we have that much more mental illness or depression. I think it can be an easy cop out for someone who does not feel good or is sad. Instead of working through their problems, it is just easier to pop a pill. Which, they think will make all their problems go away. When if does not work, then they do get depressed and blame the doctors.

It is the negative results of our environment that has caused this crises and I believe it will continue to get worse. We need to help our fellow man when we can and but many people need to begin to take responsibilty for their own action rather than blame others. I look around me, and it is difficult to find anyone that does not claim the are depressed.

Our only solution is bring God back into our lives, along with morality. Then let us all pray for one another. I believe in the power of prayer and it will take a miracle from God to get this nation and its people back on track. May God Bless and Heal each of us.

Obtain a bunch of wolves. Lock them in cages and put them in suits. Let them reproduce and remain out of the woods for generations. When one of them tries to run free or gets a spark of wildness, drug him or her and call it a problem. Most importantly, convince all of the wolves that they're not really wolves. Of course they're going to go insane.

I think part of it is that it's so publicized. I think people have suffered from various forms of "depression" for years, but just recently (in the past 10-15 years) has it come to the surface and become more socially acceptable.

Therefore, more people are openly seeking help for it, and drug companies are cashing in. You'll see tons of ads on tv for anti-depressant/anxiety/bi-polar/etc meds. ..and this seems to perpetuate the cycle of people asking for help, sometimes whether it is legitimately needed or not.

Sure, I think many of the meds do wonders for those who truly need them. ..And psychiatry has its place for sure, at least for those who don't have an unbiased ear to turn to elsewhere.

I'm suffering from OCD and I believe the best way of treating it is by talking to someone you really trust...sometimes talking to someone is the best thing...yeah is a shame that half of our population are suffering from some sord of depression...I believe that if the problem is not that serious you should just talk to someone you really trust....what i believe that society should do to help is tring to make counseling more easily go out there and not make depression seem as some type of weird thing from out of space...the best thing is to inform the people about these type of illness....

I've heard its the way society is nowadays, a lot of trying to do everything quickly and everything revolving around money, and so on. I don't really have a good answer here.

In my own opinion, I don't believe in either medication or psychiatry; I had a therapist once for my depression but she wasn't especially useful, and I downright refused to even try any anti-depressants. And what could society do? Hm. Nothing they're going to do, for sure. Just be generally friendlier and more accepting people. Not to say everyone is unfriendly and shunning, but a lot of people just tend to stick to their little (or whatever size) circle of friends.

I am acutually looking at this for my A level psycholgy at the moment, it is really interesting.

I believe that the fact is there are just more people being diagnosed with depression. Although these levels of depression have always been there, before now it hasnt been diagnosed so much. Levels of depression are greater in western society, but this doesnt neccesarily mean that depression isnt present in eastern society, it just isnt being diagnosed.

This can also be coupled with the lower levels of training that General Practisioners are apparently having, therefore they are more willing to diagnose depression for an easy life(obviously you would only beleive this if you were a sinicle person).

Another thing that could be said is that the demands of life are just naturally increasing, therefore people are obviously going to be under more stress, thus leading to depression due to the imbalanced levels of stress hormones in the blood.

Sorry if this was just waffle, but I thought it was helpful when writing it!

I think more people feel comfortable talking about their experiences with depression or other types of mental illness.

I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder 5 years ago and I know that medication and therapy works, but only to the extent that I let it.

I have been blessed with family, friends, and medical professionals who help me. As with all things, the most important thing people can do is to practice tolerance and educate themselves about mental health.

I think depression and anxiety is getting worse because just look around...everywhere you look theres some kind of shooting on the news, trees getting cut down, pollution, global warming, war ..... everything feels very out of our control. And feeling in control is important for people with anxiety and depression.

I have OCD, medications did help me...a lot. But I guess it just depends if your depression/anxiety is environmental (as a resault of things you are experiencing around you ) or inherited, in my family almost everyone has OCD .

It's all the wrong approach! The old way Live and Let Live has been forgotten which is the main cause of most depressions. Now adays if one hollers a bit some so called N.P. will say that one has a mood disorder or schizo. As if we are suppose to be passive puppets tolerating what annoys us! Medications are the wrong way to help cause they don't they only complicate the matter diminishing the dopamine level and result the person is still unhappy but society just doesn't see the unhappiness. If the person complains about the unhappiness the meds are increased so the person winds up pretending to be happy. The best answer is to sharpen the mind balance it out with alertness so the person is more aware of what is and what isn't not less! Herbs not meds are the answer.. the right herbs Gingko Biloba or Vervain not the diminishing ones.
Eastern Society if you mean East of Canada they diaganose
depression illness almost as much as the Western Provinces.
Only a fool would say that in East diagnosis isn't done!

I never seemed to fit in society, I was never comfortable being around other people. I'm not academic, or wonderfully looking or talented and not much of a talker. I got bullied a lot at school, i never fitted in, found it hard to make friends. It got worse at college and when I started work I got more depressed, I didn't want to go out of the house, I had anxiety attacks, made myself sick.
The people at my work place thought I was strange because I didn't fit in. I went to the doctors, but they just gave me anti-depressants, of which i took two off.
The reasons for my depression was partly because I was a bit introvert, the other part because I was constantly picked on.
The only way I came out of my depression was myself, I made friend at work, then it carried on. I started going out more, started drinking more, having fun. I then joined acting groups and now I'm enjoying myself more and more.
If you are depressed, it's mainly because you feel all alone, but your not. There are some wonderfully weird exotic people out their, it's just knowing where to find them. They're called friends and they come in all shapes and sizes.

First time I went to a social worker here in Missouri, she gave me a written test to decide if I was "clinically depressed." Well, according to the test, I was. But I was surprised, because I would not have described myself that way. I'd had a run of stress for over a year, starting with the essential bus to get to work being out on strike for a month, then I got laid off (the bus strike proved they could run the place without me, I guess), then My Steve committed suicide.

Anyway, it wasn't so much that I was depressed, as rather lost in self-pity, as I saw it. However, my doctor prescribed Zoloft for me, and it actually has helped a good deal.

My guess is that it's not so much that more people are more depressed, but that it is being diagnosed more, and perhaps being exaggerated by the medical profession. Still, if the medication does indeed help, why not?

I truly think that more people are not depresses, but more people are coming out about it. 20 years ago, one did not talk about such things, especially any kind of mental illness. A lot of people have and will continue to self medicate themselves with alcohol and marijuana ans whatever. Perhaps this is why we have such an increase of illegal drugs. I know for a fact the when a psychiatrists prescribes a medication they can and do work. Sometimes it takes a few different kinds of trial and error to find a medication that works well. I know this because my husband has a mental illness and if he was not on a medication, he would not be able to function. I have seen him without medication, and it is very scary and upsetting. With medication, he is pretty much normal.

Could be some people are not experiencing enough sunshine. Seriously.

I also believe it could be the way society is. Peer pressure, be it childhood/teenhood and adulthood is getting worse.

Also, this is a very shallow society. People placing too much emphasis on a person's appearance. All that should matter is how a person is on the inside!

The fact that in this society, it is not so acceptable to be the good guy/girl. We're suppose to be wild and free and be bad guys/girls. Well NOOOO thank you! I am perfectly content trying to be the good girl and my idea of freedom is doing the right thing, having a conscience. And more importantly, trying to be godly!

I don't have a particular explanation for people who don't believe in God, but for those who do, it helps just to put all focus on gaining heavenly treasures instead of wordly treasures. Just lean on God and accept His help. Not all people with chemical imbalance are having spiritual troubles. I'm sure there are lots of people who follow the will of God and still have chemical imbalance; just some people need a change of spiritual life, or change things to grow closer to God, and that's enough to overcome depression.

I witnessed people with chemical imbalance, many of them, after help with meds and talk with counselors and psychiatrists, they are able to move on bigger and better things in their lives.

Something like this is one of those "One size does not fit all" scenarios. Some people need professional help; others, just a change in their life, and others, just need to find the right way to gain a strong sense of self-esteem.

For me, I found that what really works for me is gaining a strong sense of self-esteem and make changes in my spiritual life.
