Question: So, when anxiety/depression medication is generic, does that means it's over-the-counter, or does it just have a weaker effect?

Along with what's stated above me, a generic brand can, by law, have 20% less of the drug in the medication. So says my psyhchiatrist.
And this:
The FDA requires that any approved drug be effective within a 20% range of the original patented or brand name drug. This means that the effectiveness may be 20% greater or 20% less effective than the brand name so that two generic drugs could contain as much as a 40% difference from each other.

Generic medicine is what describes a medicine that just uses its medical name rather than a brand name.
For example
Fluoxetine is the Generic name
Prozac is the Brand name
The medicines are exactly the same but the Generic tends to be cheaper.
Their effects and usage are no different.

GENERIC doesnt mean over the counter meds. It is cheaper than the branded one. And yes, it has a weaker effect.

Generic medicine has the same active ingredient as the original one which is no longer protected by patent.
The name of the drug is its proper active ingredient name instead of a brand name. ie. Ambien(brand name), zolpidem tartrate (generic/active ingredient)
Any number of replicas can be placed on the market, all with similar formulations, but not necessarily identical.
They do however all have to go through the same saftey and quality tests demanded as the original product.
Generic drugs are usually cheaper because your not paying for a brand name and they don't have a lesser effect.
Generic is a cheaper version of the brand name. Your paying lesser for a generic brand than if you would pay for a brand name. Even though a Brand name drugs work better, you should get the same affect with a generic brand, it just might work a little slower.
