Should I tell my employer that I have ADHD? What have been your experiences?!

Question: I prefer answers from adults with ADHD.

Answers: I prefer answers from adults with ADHD.

Yes you should tell them at an appropriate time. You should probably NOT tell them when interviewing assuming you don't actually have the job yet. Unfortunately, though illegal, it might effect their opinion. They can't fire you though, and it is important that they are aware of something they might perceive as a problem.

In all honesty, yes, you should tell your employer you have ADHD. ADHD is considered a serious and chronic health problem which is protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act as well (depending upon your symptoms) would qualify you for Family Medical Leave (under federal guidelines for sure). If you have issues with your concentration or staying organized (two of the most prolific symptoms of ADHD) reasonable accommodations could be made for you. I would talk to your Human Resources Department to discuss this issue if you feel it would improve your work environment. I hope this helps a little.

Yes. Employers cannot fire you, due to the Disabilities Act. Check into it... and then ask to meet with your boss in private in order to let them know.

Well i have Manic Depression and from my experience,..it was really hard for me to tell my Jobcentre adviser cause i was worried about what he would say.

Luckily he was really supportive about it and talked about what i needed to do next.

As for my ex employer,..i couldn't tell them.I felt like they were making my illness worse so i wouldn't give them the satisfaction by saying I've got depression cause there the kind of people who take pleasure in someone else misery.

As for you're case,..i would tell you're employer confidentially.

And if you're boss is nice about it and can make allowances for you when you aren't at you're best,..then go ahead!.

It'll make you feel like a weight has been lifted of you're shoulders.

I know that's how i felt! ;)

I would be careful in deciding to tell your employer. Although they cannot fire you directly for disclosing this information, they can come up with reasons later on. If you do get fired you will always wonder if they did it because of your disability. Some people are supportive, and then others are not. You won't know which until you disclose. Personally, I wouldn't take the risk.

That is none of their business. So, why would you need to tell them? As long as you have it under control, it does not need to be discussed.
