Benzos cause the worse and most long lasting cog-fog. Once you are dependent, the fog will go on and on. Some people claim to have permanent cognitive damage

The Ashton manual is the most touted pamphlet on the internet. The recent update changed only two points. The rest of it is over 40 years old.

Heroin can be overcome in weeks. Benzos may take years. I vote for benzos as the most damaging drug on earth. They can produce the most severe and bizarre symptoms around. If not done by very small increments, the symptoms can stick around. Ashton's individual reductions are far to large to be really safe.

The time needed to produce damage varies. A month is within the safe zone acording to most reports

I'd say heroin is worse. Both can cause long-term problems, but I think heroin is much more damaging, addictive, and associated with dangerous company and behaviors. If you need to get off benzo's, check the "Ashton Manual" link below.

I'm not necessarily sure that heroin effects the cognitive skills of the brain. The only way it leaves you 'retarded' is with withdrawl symptoms which go away, and of course with the risk of addiction. Benzodiazeprine however has been shown to have direct effects on cognition. So i would go with that.

Heroin, really did you even have to ask, benzos when used in moderation are ok, maybe you are on too much.

In terms of abusive dosages, then benzos. Benzos are much more dangerous than most people believe. They are one of the few drugs who's withdrawal can kill you. In my experience as a counselor they are also much more addictive....yet often overlooked as a danger.
