BIPOLAR PEOPLE: Do you know why you have bipolar?!

Question: I am bipolar too. I am not "sure" as to why I got it. I've been diagnosed bipolar for about ten years now. It progressivelty gets worse; both the depression and the mania. Do you know where you got it from? Do you know if life circumstances played more of a part than DNA? Please let me know.

Thank you.

for me it was s--t happens but dont let a doctor give you a label. you live for you and let others give you as well as give yourself MOTIVATION

I got it because I was sexually assaulted like a million times when I was a child and its how I deal with it now, It sucks. Life experience definetally plays a part in it. Good luck to you!

Bipolar is genetic. It runs in your family usually on your mothers side. It is a chemical imbalance in the brain.

My DR explained it to me like this: Part of it can be hereditary, however the environment that you are raised in is the deciding factor. The reason I am Bi-Polar is because my father physically abused me my entire childhood.

my dad has it i think its from getin drunk alot cuz he gets mad alot wen hes drunk and he has to take zoloft but w**d helps him

I cant say for sure but have just been diagnosed Bipolar although I think a Dr thought I had it earlier but never gave me the name Bipolar as I was on mood stabilising drugs about 3 years ago - I stayed on them for 6 months and then stopped and felt ok but in the last 2 years of marriage I was constantly being raped by my husband and he left me 6 months ago - I thought I was just happy for the first time in years until relatives told me I was being somewhat manic and then I read up on the condition and did the tests and found I probably am - I went to a good psychiatrist in the area and explained my elevated moods, speeding thoughts, occasional stuttering as my mouth cant keep up with my thoughts and interupting people and of course the major spending sprees and he told me I have bipolar type II

I have also been taking Endep (an antidepressant) for the last few years - apparently this can trigger mania in those predisposed to it so Im coming off that gradually now and will be trying Valpro - years ago I was put onto Tegratol but I just felt numb on it - not happy - not sad - not normal - just a nothing or numb feeling and didnt like that much. I came off the medication after 6 months and thought I was ok but I guess being sexually assaulted constantly and learning to live with it just made me depressed all the time and then when he left I felt happy - a real high - I thought this really was just what happiness felt like.

I really do think life situation plays a big part in it - I believe you are born with the tendancy towards Bipolar but its the life situations that trigger it

EDIT: nobody else in my family has any mental illness so I cant say that its hereditary - even going back generations.. just me. Also my father used to beat us alot as kids although my sister seems to have come through it ok but it was explained to me that this probably started it for me and then my marriage just kind of set it in cement

genetic/life experience
