it's called "borderline" because when they first came up with the name, the patients they were treating seemed to fall BETWEEN psychosis and neurosis. since they didn't really fall into either category, they said they were on the border between the two.
They use the word "borderline" to conceal the fact that they have absolutely no idea what is going on. Honestly.
I have BPD and the easiest, shortest way to explain what Borderline means, is "UNSTABLE".
