If you attempt suicide, is it compulsory for you to be put in a mental hospital?!

Question: If you attempt suicide you will firstly get assessed by a Doctor who will then decide whether you will need to be hospitalised, they will only do this if they deem it necessary for your own safety, they will ask if you will go into hospital on an involuntary basis so that they may be able to assess your needs over a short period of time. However, if you disagree to go into hospital as an in voluntary client/ patient and they feel that you are unwell mentally then they may feel it necessary to place you in hospital under section 2 of the mental health act (1983) which is a 28 day assessment section (UK). hope this helps :).

Only if the doctor sees you as a threat to your own life

He the doctor has to by law have you put into a protective place for your own safety

Yes. If you try to commit suicide, you will end up in a mental hospital as they assume you are doing it for a cry for help.

It is a crime, how they deal with you for it is discretionary.

they cant do that ,on the day you are getting out of hospital a doc will speak to you ,and you go home and ur GP gets a letter stating what u have done

Nah! I went hospital after I tried to kill myself. But they didnt lock me up, I had to register with a mental hospital and had intense therapy for a while though.

Not if you are successful. ;-)

i know sum 1 who's attempted it 3 times hes just goes in hospital to be treated for what hes done then goes home, hes a head case.

they might put you in for observation. believe it or not it is against the law to kill yourself. But I dont know about attempted suicide. I have never heard of anyone going to jail for attempting suicide. And of course if you do manage it then they are not going to stick your cold dead a** in a cell.

It would depend on how many times you've attempted it, and whether or not any other intervention has helped you, such as therapy, medication, etc.

They will have a hearing. The person is either taken to a mental health facility or a hospital (depending on whether the attempt was damaging to his/her physical health), and awaits an evaluation from the staff. The staff is then required to contact the authorities. A judge will visit the facility (they usually hear cases a couple of times a week) and determine if the person is competent. Based on the recommendation of the staff and the behavior of the person, he will decide if further treatment is needed, or if the person should be released.

No. It depends on he risk you are to yourself or others.
Keep in mind that suicide attempts can affect family, friends etc... Suicide attempts are recorded in your medical records. When you try to get life assurance etc then you may well be turned down, otherwise your premiums will be huge.
Best to talk to someone if you are having problems.

yes

It really depends. I attempted suicide...too many times...and was never put in a psychiatric ward. I was, however, held in the ER for 12 hours. If that counts, I don't know.

It also depends on who's treating you. Your psychiatrist/counselor/whoever may say "no, you have to be in a psych ward". And because you're now a danger to yourself, you have to go, and they will (if needed) involuntarily commit you.

It definately also depends on the severity of your attempt. If you physically do serious damager (jump in front of a car/off a bridge/become comatose/etc) then you *will* have to be in the psych ward.

No, when i took an overdose i was taken to hospital for observation for a few hours, got given a box of paracetemol and sent home. i didnt see anyone else for 2 weeks.
xxx

I suppose it depends on the circumstances,
often for people who attempt suicide it is their first cry for help in a pretty desperate way,
for others who have attempted it more than once or have been receiving therapy already then it seems that intense therapy maybe needed and the best care would be in hospital.

no they dont care, although i have been there for 5weeks,not being funny it was a laugh at times and scary .try sittin in front of 12-15 people who are all writting things about you when ur not well.they didn't care that i was a threat to myself but they started to care when i went for the doctors.

only if they see fit. Its up to them.
