That is one way of preventing self-harm. The next step would be learning to breathe through it, even if it is panting. Anything to get the mind off the cutting, that is safer, is good.

I would not condemn her if she was my daughter, nor would I commit her. I would know that this is simply a way of coping with things that seem insurmountable. I would also provide her with safer ways of coping and help her realize that she is important, and valued, and loved.

I don't know if you are the girl in the story or if you just know someone who cuts. It doesn't matter to me. Your question is a good one and you are a strong person to be able to post it. Hopefully my answers have helped a bit. You, or the person, are strong enough to fight the unhealthy impulsive desires with something that is not as dangerous.

Remember this: SI = Self-Injury or SI = Self Indulgence. A hot bubble bath is always better than the sharps.

If you are stop, Dont do this stuff. Come on, Face your problems with courage. Dont back down fight your demons and shine your light through the darkness. Cutting, self injury is a wimps path, take the good path, step up, and Face your problems you deserve to live a great life, Your beautiful person.

Holding your breath is preferable to cutting, no question. If it alleviates the pressure, then I think it's a wise choice.

Although she may want to talk to a counselor or therapist about the feelings that make her want to do this stuff in the first place.

I think it is great that they found a way to prevent themself from cutting. I do not consider it self harm unless they're suffocating themself. If I was the mother of this girl, I would've gotten her help when she was cutting. Because she is learning how to stop, I'd offer to get her help and I'd motivate her to keep helping herself. I don't know who this is.

As long as the girl is not blacking out, that can cause the loss of brain cells

Self harm is usually defined as something that causes tissue damage (cut, burn, brand, etc.) or leaves a mark (bruising, etc.). Holding your breath and then releasing it... no tissue damage. No marks. And it's not harmful unless you hold your breath until you pass out. If it's like -inhale- -pause- -exhale, that's fine. You (or whoever the girl is) are simply concentrating on your breathing patterns and the sensation of breathing in order to prevent self harm. I don't really see a problem with it.
