Answers: i mean, how can they be helped? how can they come out of their shells? these people constantly think they're no good.

That's the first important step: to recognize that there is a problem. If one thinks that s/he struggles with low self-esteem or confidence, one has overcome half way of the problem. If it happens to you, good job on recognizing the problem! You can gain back your self confidence. But if it happens to someone else, the person has to want to admit the problem first. No matter how hard you tell her/him that s/he has a problem, s/he will just deny it till s/he wants to admit it. So, if that is the case, don't feel bad if you can't help them.

To be aware that there is a problem within yourself is a tremendous step for improvement/recovery.

Then, one might need to choose his or her environment wisely, for example, be with friends who are positive, understanding, and relaxed. Loose those who are controlling, preachy, anxious, cocky, or even depressed. Friends are contagious. Therefore, positive friends are much better to have to overcome one's low self esteem. Positive friends will not insult or say mean things to you. They have better vocabulary to express their opinion in the right way. In other words, they think before speaking. And, of course you know who your friends are. You need to decide which one(s) are real friends. And sometimes it takes time for a real friend to emerge. So, be patient.

Next step, if you have the resources, travel. To see things outside of one's comfort zone and day-to-day surroundings helps put things in perspective. You will start to appreciate life, events, and most importantly, yourself. Travel does not need to be faraway places. Neighboring cities or local attractions that you haven't been to is perfectly fine. However, if you can't travel, you can do the other thing: volunteer. To help other people actually gives you the most reward: it helps yourself. You feel needed, appreciated, and useful. It definitely boost your self esteem. Of course, start on small scale, e.g., deliver food/blanket to senior homes, pet shelter, or something like that.

I hope this helps. Thank you for sharing.

They can surround themselves with people who have self-confidence and good self-esteem. These people can serve as role models for them. They can also engage in activities that they enjoy on a regular basis, and even volunteer for a favorite charity.

Help others.Do volunteer work at church, school, scouts, look in the news paper.Getting around others who need your help makes you feel better and needed, and also puts the focus on someone other than yourself.
