First--Meditation is one of the most beneficial things you can learn to do for yourself. I'm a psychologist, and generally teach and encourage my patients to take up meditation when they reach the point in their therapy where they are ready to do so. Regular meditation will generally reduce anxiety and depression. It can lower high blood pressure by as much as 10-20 points. It is a natural antidote for toxic experiences and traumatic memories. Meditation reduces the likelihood of heart attacks. There are many books on meditation. To get started, I would recommend Herbert Benson's book "The Relaxation Response." It's old (1976), but a classic in the field, and it's the book that got a lot of us mental health professionals started in meditation. Benson gives instructions for a simple meditation procedure that anybody can learn. You can Find a used paperback copy of Benson's book on Amazon for a few dollars.
