Switching antidepressants?!

Question: I just got put on Celexa about 1.5 weeks ago for Depression NOS and GAD, and I actually think it is making things worse for me. Since I have started taking it, I have grown more irritable, my anxiety is more unbearable at times (to the point where I will spend an hour shaking), and I seem to not be able to remember small things. I have spoken with my girlfriend about it (who has been on several SSRIs), and she says that it cannot be the medicine, as it takes 3-4 weeks in order to be feeling any side effects...basically it is all in my head. I don't agree, as I have been feeling worse since about 3 days after taking the pill, and never before then. Basically, what I think I am trying to ask is this: Is it all in my head, or since this all started after the first pill, could it be the pills?

I appreciate you people answering this question...I have never been on any medication for anything in my life, so I really don't know what is going on. I am on 10 mg/day, and upping it soon.

Well, your girlfriend is right, it actually takes 6 weeks for an SSRI to start doing its whole job in your system. However, it could be your body reacting to the pills. I have been on and off every anti-d there is and I can tell you that with a lot of them, you will get adverse side effects in the first few days or weeks of taking them.

My advice is this: give it a chance. Once your body gets over that initial "shock" things will probably get better. 1.5 weeks is a very short amount of time, and you are on a low dose. If the side effects are absolutely awful and you can't deal with them right now, call your doctor right away. the WORST thing you can do is stop taking them abruptly. you have to taper it off with help from your doctor.

One last thing, a lot of anti-d's can increase anxiety for a little while, but it gets better, trust me. When I started wellbutrin I was having like 2 severe panic attacks a day for the first couple of weeks, and then it was gone. hang in there

Good luck!

pills like that act differently on everyone. i thnik it is the pills, because although side affects start later for most people, they could very easily be kicking in for you earlier.

I was on celexa it didn't help at all. But everyone is different so it might work for you. It can take between a week to three weeks before you feel its full affect. Also, many people have to try several anti-depressents. The meds could be the problem, but you should wait a while before upping the dosage or changing meds. Good luck

tell your doctor about it because you can start having side effects right away.you don't want to up your dosage and have it get worse.good luck to you -you sound like a nice person!
