The dreams may stop in a while, with psychological assistance. I think it's time for you to detach and let your 30-year old son be responsible for himself. He's in charge of his life; you can't fix him. It's up to him and the doctor or therapist to decide what to do about the dreams, whether to medicate him or not, and with what. If you drive your son to the doctor, stay in the waiting room and let the doctor tell you if he wants your input or tell you what he thinks you should know.

It's not easy being the parent of an addict. Your trying to help your son may actually work against him, in the long run. I'd suggest you check out Al-Anon or Nar-Anon for your own peace of mind. They are both helpful non-profit support groups for parents of addicts or alcoholics. Take care of yourself as first priority.

The first respondent is correct. This is a poor place to get advice about medical matters.

think you had better talk to a doc not answers

One of my uncles would take Ambien and he swore by it. Look into that with a professional perhaps a psychiatrist

under all of the circumstances, i would just completely be honest with the doctor and let him decide what will be best for your son. and if you don't get the help you need, consult another doctor. don't give up. and possibly a specialist may be needed. sleep study???? just consult the physician for your answers.

why are so ready to just put him on some pill? Sounds like he needs to talk to someone!

dont think taking tablets is a good idea , just be there for him , he does need to talk to someone , a week is not long offer to sleep in the same room hug him when he having a bad dream , i no your worried but keep him of the tablets , the dreams are a side effect of the drugs , go talk to your doctor tomorrow for advice , good luck , you are great

Having gone through the same experiences at 24 yrs old, drugs, nightmares and panic attacks;my doctor refered me to a psychologist who worked along side a psychiatrist who worked out what was best for me.I was prescribed Risperdal, I didn't like the side effects so they changed my prescription to sertraline. The point I'm making is that your son should see his doctor who will point him in the right direction to enjoy a full and happy life that I'm enjoying now, without the assistance of any meds or councelling any more.

Look on WebMD.com or google it for the names of medications for emotional imbalances.

It sounds like he's having extreme withdrawal problems from the drugs, addiction he had. Maybe you can give him chamomile tea, and tension tamer tea. or even calms tablets, or valerian to help him sleep at night, there is also something called melatonin . These are all natural tablets or teas. So no major side effects like medications.
Also a brain pep, or lecithin or lgutamine can help pep and clear the brain so it can function properly.
You can go to the health food store to find more natural things to use,. As since you didnt mention what kind of drugs. You dont want to have him take the worng things and have more problems than help with them.
Then have him write out the dreams or nightmares in a log. To keep track of them and see if they change or decrease in the terrifying scenarios the mind is doing to him. As sometimes getting them out on paper can help alleviate them from the mind during the day.

Medication does have effect but only temporary and in addition the medicins may have their own side effects. As far as possible, therefore, resort to and dependence on medicines should be only on doctor's orders and that to of limited duration.

I hope you have heard about Vipassana Mediation(See relevlant Website). It does have a very good effect on problems such as those listed by you. Please get in touch with the nearest Vipassana Centre .It will help your son to return to normalcy.

Some drugs (and the use of them) will block dreams from naturally happening, so he could have built up a backlog of dreams which are now bursting the seams of his mind to be realised.

Rather than take even more drugs to block the dreams. perhaps it is time he reflected upon them and their meanings to him?

he had his reasons i think to take those drugs and now he is clean his dreams are now going to show him some truths and new things to know.

don't take phenegram because i take them and i start dreaming more and waking up in sweats
