the other alternatives are counselling and therapy, or else general relaxation exercises (they help you feel less anxious overall)

for free online counselling you can do by yourself (yes, really, and no this isn't my site) you can join moodgym, it's been proven to work on the majority of people :)
I know it says "cognitive behavioural therapy for preventing depression", but CBT works on anxiety too. =]

sounds like it might be panic attacks or anxiety as you say. you should speak to a doctor - they won't put you on medication if you don't want it, but they might refer you to a therapist who can help you work out what's triggering these spells of anxiety. also in general just make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating well, etc. if your old job caused you a lot of stress then think about getting a new one - my mum was off work with stress for ages and now that she's got a new one she's a lot happier even though it pays a bit less. good luck!

It does seem you are having anxiety, or panic attacks. You need to first get a checkup from your doctor to see if it may be health related. Next would be to see a therapist to find out what may be triggering the attack, and be adamant about not wanting to take drugs if you feel it's not necessary. Sometimes once you can identify what causes the attacks, you can do some things to prevent them from being so serious. You may still have anxiety, but it won't be as dibilitating as your current attacks seem to be.

I would suggest carrying a diary with you. When you have an anxiety, or panic attack do everything you can to record the experience in the most minute detail. Note things such as what taste was in your mouth, what you smelled, what you heard, and of course what you perceived. Not necessarily what you saw, but your perceptions of what you were seeing. This information can help your therapist analyze and treat the condition much more effectively.

Good luck.

what you are having is defidently anxiety/panic disorder. If you do not want to go on medication ( which is probably your best bet) than you need to mentally overcome it. You can do this by seeking counseling who will teach you breath and mental exercises. You can also try yoga which is amazing at calming you down. All you have to do is buy a yoga tape and try it every monring to see if you see any difference.
