Are schizophrenics dangerous?!

Question: Crime statistics show that schizophrenics are less violent than teenagers, also the above poster who said that they are more likely to be harmed by others than to harm someone else is correct. The news sensationalizes the few instances where someone who is schizophrenic commits a crime because it's usually something really horrible, but for the most part if you met the typical schizophrenic even in the midst of a psychotic episode they would still be very friendly. The ones who get violent that is not a symptom of schizophrenia, that is simply a person who is aggressive aside from having schizophrenia just like in the general population.

They can be, if they're not taking their meds.

If you think you are after them yes. If they stay on the medication no.

Not usually. Most are not violent, although it is possible (particularly with those who are unmedicated and have paranoia based delusions and/or hallucinations).

most of them are not.....

That's a very broad question without a definite answer. Schizophrenics are no more dangerous than any other random grouping of people.

yes

one killed my local priest last year!!!!

All you need to know about schizophrenia is found in this site, http://hubpages.com/hub/Schizophrenia-an... It is nothing to be scared of and 1 in 100 people have it. Think of all the people at a shopping centre or public place that may have it. Most are not dangerous and are frightened of telling people they have it because people are terrified. People with schizophrenia are more likely to be harmed by normal people than they are ever likely to commit a crime

in some cases yes...it depends on the kind of schizophrenia.
two days ago a friend of my daughters as been shot to death by his uncle because he thought the boy was not taking good care of his grandma..crazy ha...
or 3 years ago our super's sister was stabbed to death by her nephew...he said later that he was told to kill her because she is evil...those people really need to be under supervision..

I really don't think they can be dangerous while taking their medication. Off medication, I believe they might be dangerous to themselves.

It depends on their stage, and also their conditions of what kind of thoughts they are into.

It is best not to trigger them. As they can get upset.
Generally, when they are on regular medication, their condition can be rather stable and some even go back to work.

Yes......we are.
No we're not.

Hello,
Living with one in the past all I can go on is my personal experience.
I had to choose between my kids and him, and well ......there was and is no choosing when it comes to my kids.

Anyhoo he was infatuated with fire. Every where we went, lived (we were always moving), there were fires. At the time I did not realize he had been diagnosed, I felt he needed medication to make the voices stop though, this was just common sense. There was no way to get him to go to a doctor and would get violent with me when I would even bring it up.
His family was fed up so they were no help. He was not the man I fell in love with at all.
Stress would bring on many thoughts that were uncontrollable, burning a hotel was the last straw. I could not see raising babies up in such a environment.
In my situation this person was violent. This does not mean everyone with schizophrenic is dangerous.
Schizophrenia is hereditary and can be controlled with medication. At that time I did not know anything about this disease, but now that I am raising children from this relationship I have learned a lot. Such as aspergers syndrome (on the autism scale) a side symptom is schizophrenia. It also shows it's nasty head usually in the late teen years. Girls have it but it is said to inflict boys the most (if one wants to believe this?).
Hope this helps you understand a little about this mental condition. I can go on and on how hard life was living with a man who would not get help (which is also common with people who are inflicted).
