Am I Addicted to Gaming?!

Question: I've been gaming for about two years now and the time I play is steadily increasing. I play about 2-6 hours a day (CoD4, CS:S, EvE Online) depending on how much is going on. I still do my homework, but I try and get it done as fast as possible and put very little effort in. My grades have slipped only slightly and I still play on a sports team. I've only recently just started neglecting my hobbies and my parents are starting to worry. At this point I do think I might be addicted but I'd like other opinions and maybe some suggestions on how to get rid of the addiction. I've tried quitting but I always just go back because I have nothing fun to fill that 2-6 hour void I created...

If you're truly addicted then you're unable to break the addiction yourself. You'll need some help. I've never heard of a gaming version of AA, but I'm sure there are counseling services which can help.

However, you may not be truly addicted. Gaming is more immediately satisfying than school, so it's natural that you'd be on a slippery slope where you spend more and more time gaming.

Before doing anything drastic, try this. Sit down with your parents and try to come up with what you think a reasonable amount of gaming time is, and during what hours. For example, maybe the time for you to game is between the time you get home from school and the time you eat dinner. Then, no more for the rest of the night. On weekends maybe you get from after dinner until bed, and that's it.

If you find that you're simply unable to stick to an agreed upon schedule like that, then you may be truly addicted and should seek some outside help.

Good luck.

actually you are addicted, but its not to the point where you cant go a day without (i hope) so i used to play CSS 6-8 hours from 6pm till midnight or so and wakeup at 5 to go to school, i had about a C average. but school should be #1, just yah...

Do you have a girlfriend? They can fill every time void you can possibly have.... =) Or just get a part time job.

get ur eye sight checked..that will tell every thing

Yes,it does sound as though you are on the slippery slope... Please get help asap. Find a therapist that specializes in problem gambling. Also you might want to look at your state's resources for problem gamblers. Good luck.

Hey buddy, I used to be in a situation just like this a year back. My Game's of choice were World of Warcraft ,Socom-3, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142 and Halo2/3. I played about 8-10 hours a day [weekday's] and 12-14 hours [weekend's]. I was like this for about 4 years [Gaming constantly, different game's also]. But then this year 10th grade i realized that gaming was ruining my life. I was 16 and never had a Girlfriend. Lost most of my friend's. Never socialized. etc...
So one day i just decided to quit all together. I figured that if i made it so i couldn't go back to the games i wouldn't. So that day gave away my "WoW" account to a schoolmate for free, told him to never let me have it back. Uninstalled "wow". Canceled x-box live. Sold my PlayStation 2. And sat down with myself and really thought about what i missed over the years. Ever since i haven't played and game's at all. And I'm more happy with myself than i ever was raiding in a virtual dungeon for epic Lo0t that no one but me cared about.
