Question about cutting and my doctor?!

Question: I have been cutting for 3years. I'm trying to stop. I am talking to someone about it. My mom is taking me to the doctor for an exam. I have lots of scars on my thighs. Will the doctor tell her? I don't want my mom to know. If I tell the doctor not to tell can she? I am 17. If I was 18would she have to be quite?

Your Doctor may or may not ask you about it, and you can explain as you did here. That should be enough for them. They really are not allowed to discuss you with any other person by law but the line is blurred when they have to address concerns of you to your parent. You can assure the Dr. you are addressing the issue and ask not to have the parent informed. You can bring the Dr. into your information loop because they are your friend and have a moral obligation to help. You should not fear that. But if they are not comfortable with your issues, they will tell you so and give you direction, and will notify a parent if their concerns are for your safety, but only with your consent and as a mediator. If you don't address your cutting (yes I did it as a kid) it tends to escalate and the Dr., who knows this will probably give you a referral and an ultimatum to seek help. As you are already doing that I don't feel he will compromise your trust, and he will not do so for moral and legal reasons.

i had cuts on my wrist when i had my exam and the doctor didn't say anything try to hide your cuts or keep him away from that area

I believe there is a confidentiality agreement even if u are underage. either way, you do need help..and maybe getting your mom involved wouldnt be so bad. no one loves u more than your mother. she should know to the extent that u are in pain. if u are doing this to yourself there are underlying reasons why..and u need therapy. but u can conquer it! good luck.

as long as they are not fresh cuts they doctor probably wont ask... if he does.. tell him they are from years ago and that you dont do that anymore... if they are fresh cuts try to hide them.

i think that if he tells your mother, she will not be mad at you. it is more likely that she'll be worried and she'll figure out something you can do about it. and as for quitting, if you want to, try putting a rubber band (loose one) around your wrist and snapping it when you are anxious. a lot of cutters do it to feel better.

if the doctor asks you can tell her u USED to cut cut youself but not anymore, or u can say you have a cat at home lol

oh my! for your own sake get help for yourself>>>

You have the right to privacy even though you are under 18. Your doctor should not tell your Mom, especially if you specifically prohibit him/her from doing so. If your Mom does your laundry, its possible that she knows already and just doesn't know how to talk to you about it. You should continue with the counseling though, and consider telling your family especially if the trigger for cutting comes from the household.

If you're over 16, confidentiality rules say they can't tell your parents.

i just have one question... why do you cut yourself for?
i think you may get upset, but what do you cut your self for?

ok answering your question: i think even if the doctor sees the scars he shouldn't tell your mom if you ask him not to tell her...
unless your mom asks him about it.

Your doctor is not allowed to say anything to your mother. Go in to the doctor on your own. A friend of my used to cut themselves. Your reasons are your own, everyone is different. If your doctor asks you about them tell your doctor you are talking to someone about it. As long as you know you should not cut yourself and are taking positive action to stop doing it, you are heading in the right direction. I wish you well.
