What is the biggest problem with the mental health care system these days?!

Question: I believe it is the assigning of drugs way too quickly! Shouldn't there be a set amount of sessions before meds are given? Isn't reaching the route of the problem through diagnosis and talking, and not just to make it go away through meds?

And NO, I am not an expert or a doctor. So, YES, I could be wrong. Don't take this question personally. It's just a question so keep the riot acts and diatraubes to a minimum....thanks!

Thoughts or opinions...?

you know 10 months ago and i was having serious headaches i could not stop crying of so much pain. I went to a doctor and just by telling the symptoms she said it was tergiminal nueralgia and gave me a lot of pills that were to treat epilepsy and some serious narcotics (told me i might have seizure with out me knowing it .I was so scared but deep down inside i got scarred and told my husband i didn't want to take the pills he made me go to another doctor for a second opinion and i did and took some test .Well at the end it came out that my wisdom tooth was causing pressure with my jaw bone and giving me headaches i got it pulled and took tylenol for the next week .

I agree i had psychosis for a while all they did was fill me up with pills turn me into a walking zombie and send me on my way of coarse i stopped taking them after a while even though they said i could go crazy again i told them id rather be crazy than a zombie lol Xb

wow 4 years that too bad i took my meds for 8 months and became lifeless no goals and all like you said so i told my doctor to stick the pills where the sun don't shine

I agree. Unfortunately, it's not the doctors who are determining our treatment anymore, it's the pharmaceutical companies. Doctors get huge incentives for prescribing specific drugs. I personally totally disagree with taking mental health meds. Talk therapy needs to be the first option before you resort to this, unless, of course, the person is suicidal or something dangerous and drastic.

I got prescribed Paxil after a suicide attempt and was on it for 4 years. I became a different person and had no goals or motivation. I screwed up 4 years of my life because of this drug and I am frantically making up for it now. :(

Interesting question! I agree with the medicines but I think the problem is even a little before that and leads to your problem. It's assigning anyone with a little problem with a disorder. I have ADHD... or they say I do. But I wasnt diagnosed until I was 17 and the medicine made me feel like crap. I wasn't myself but I was "more behaved". I never flipped out on anyone or did really crazy stuff before.. I was just a little more energetic than my peers. But I was in softball, volleyball, track, choir, speech, I loved to be outside, sledding, snow mobiling, 4-wheeling. I just don't like sitting inside watching tv, but because the majority of our society does they claimed I was hyper active when I believe most ppl are a little UNDER active. Hence the so many americans being overweight.

So maybe they diagnosed me wrong. I'm in college, have friends, succesfull friend ships and relationships, and all these things I'm doing without drugs they would prescribe me. Someone has a bad month.. they are depressed.. this is life and some ppl should just deal.

Please everyone don't think I'm saying no one is depressed, no one has a mental illness, but I think ppl are WAY over diagnosed. Some ppl have these problems and I hope they get help and find peace, but some is just a plea for attention. Or someone who doesn't want to deal with reality

Addressing the main issue - Raising kids with more 'elbow room' to learn' ..not Forcing them to attend classes where their true talents are suppressed...when they ARE suppressed they begin to 'create' their own world...later referred to as some kind of mental disorder i.e. B-Polar, A.D.D. etc...

i believe the biggest problem is society thinking everyone who has mental issues belongs in a hospital etc.....alot of times when a person goes to the dr...the first thing they do is prescribe meds because the person is emotionally shot...when i went in my emotions were running so high that i was exhausted......i have been dealing with theses issues most of my life and i thank my dr. for helping me get thru this....yes i had therapy and that was later when i felt better...sometimes you have to calm down before you can see what the problem really is

You are 100% right! It is not just meantal health but all medicine! If you hurt take this and if there are side effects then take this with it and don't forget to take that one to get a good nights sleep after you take the one to perk up your sex life of course. It is just plain crazy. If I stood on the corner and tried to sell the same thing they push on the evening news each night,I would be arrested! Nuts, just plain nuts!!!

They rely too much on chemical pills to find a quick fix solution.

Instead of actually taking the time out and getting to know each patient on an individual basis;
they rather just get patients to run a bunch of test and prescribe them "medications".

They don't see each and every patient as a unique individual with unique and diverse histories/backgrounds.

What these so called "doctors" and "psychiatrist" see are mass products on an assembly line.
They could care less about your problems and obsticles.

These so called "professionals" only care about making money for themselves and; making money for their industry by selling more pills.. so the companies that sponsor their hospitals and offices are happy.

If they really cared about their "patients" (or should I say customers lol) they would approach their jobs with the "Prevention and awareness are the best medicines" philosphy first..
before even considering potentially harmful pills that have side affects.

1. Unethical and negligent researchers, doctors and pharmacists
- Unreliable methods and unverifiable diagnoses

2. Drugs companies that would rather treat than cure patients because it's more profitable
- Advertisement that target vulnerable demographic
- Drugs that only mask the symptoms

Results?
Nothing is resolved without getting to the root of the problem.

The Biggest Problem could be that Doctors Prescribe Pills & other medicine way too quickly. I mean they probably don't even listen to your problem. Or you're probably not even half way done talking when they say: Pills!
I think that's the biggest problem today.

What's the biggest problem with mental health these days? Same as it's always been. It doesn't work. It's never worked. If you really want help someone you love, or yourself, you have to look harder and further away from the mental health system. As a survivor of childhood sexual, mental, emotional and physical abuse, I went on to marry a man who kept the cycle flowing, and children who suffered a great deal. My first dealings with mental health was at the ripe old age of 14, the youngest person ever admitted to that particular mental health unit. Twenty seven years later, and too many visits too count to these terrible places, I am happy to say I am as normal and happy as anyone deserves to be, no thanks to mental health Queensland. No, they made me sicker and sicker. I lost my kids, my home, my mind and my will to live. Two years ago, not long after my last suicide attempt which won me a two week holiday in one of these charming places, police escort and all, I found an angel. Truly sent from God,
she saved my life. After some excellent sessions for a few months, she offered me to join her in an inner child/self esteem workshop. This dear lady had been helping women (and men) for over twenty years. She has worked with a famous psychologist on a book, published a few years ago now on the workings of inner child therapy, which is the basis of her therapy. I have taken the pills, been institutionalised, been to hell and back so many times I could be a tour guide to the region, but , today I'm ok. Everyday gets that little bit better. Since doing this workshop I have never thought of sucide again. I still have bad days, no where near as many, and no where near as bad. I have someone who loves me more than any one else in the world, who cares for me, feeds me, dresses me,keeps me alive, talks me through the bad stuff, hugs me at any time of the day or night, the only one I can depend on above all else, me.
No, the mental health system does not work. Which is unfortunate. There's alot of people who could use their help.
