What is going on in my friends head?!

Question: my friend ryan hes 15 and its like he's either really happy or really sad? ..and he always contradicts himself. he always has to be the victim in every situation and it's like he hates you but then when you try to get away from him he wants you to stay there even though he hates you.. its really weird he always acts suicidal when hes down and i know he goes through a lot but a lot of the time i think he blows it out of proportion and its confusing to all of us people that care about him. its kind of like he only cares about himself and he wants everyone to love him.. kind of. also if some one lets him down or hurts him at all he seems to completely hate them but then a while later love them and its the same way with his self image he will sometimes talk about how amazing and great he is then hes like saying how bad he sucks and how he is worthless and stuff. i just want to know whats going on in his head so if you can help me please do.

Well, I'm neither a psychiatrist, nor am I privy to anything other than what you're telling me. What I can say is that he needs to see a professional. My guts says that he has borderline personality disorder. Only a psychiatrist can say with certainty whether or nor he does, though. I would strongly urge him to speak with someone about this. There are treatment options out there, but nobody can help him unless he asks for the help.

The symptoms you describe would suggest he has a mild form of "mania", check the web for a completed definition.
It of course cannot be dealt with here. he would need to see a mental health professional to determine the cause. Thank goodness he has a loyal friend like you. Try to continue supporting him, this is a difficult time in his life.

It is possible that your friend has bipolar disorder. He should see a doctor so he can get a referral to a psychiatrist. What he's dealing with is nasty stuff. I've had a few manic episodes in my life, and at first it feels great, but then it gets more and more intense and I have this energy surging through my body. It feels like electricity running through my brain and my veins. I can't stop what's happening to me, and I know I'm eventually going to crash. I don't sleep much and feel like something is making me do stupid things. If your friend sees a psychiatrist, they can help him figure out the right meds and hopefully some other ways to minimize the mood swings. Good luck.
