I knew that there was something wrong with my eldest son when he was about aged 2. I was pretty much fobbed off by the doctor. When he started school they flagged up his behaviour as being abnormal and tested him, but the testing was just The Conners Rating Scale test and just tested other peoples' opinions about him - because his teacher liked him she scored him low so he wasn't diagnosed.

I took him in November to be tested privately - he's now 9 - they did lots of cognitive tests and IQ tests and physical stuff and I have found out that he does indeed suffer from adhd - after all those wasted years! I feel very angry that he wasn't tested properly in the beginning. He's not being medicated at the moment as he's coping well at school, but I do give him omega 3 supplements, iron, magnesium and restrict his diet - no orange juice, artificial colours/flavourings, msg - plenty of fruit 'n' veg and home cooked food - no junk at all. Even the toothpaste I give him to use is from the health food store and has no colourings in. You don't have to go as far as that - it's up to you really, but recent studies have shown that junk and artificial additives in food do play a role in making adhd worse.

I don't know what country you're in - I think the US are more geared up towards testing for add/adhd - the UK is terrible and decent parents who are sort of coping just get fobbed off! All the lower class criminal types get lots of attention and help, but everyone else is just left to struggle.

If you're having problems with discipline then try to get the 123 Magic Book - it's by Thomas Phelan PhD and it's very good - I can recommend it - it's for 2-12 year olds.

If your instincts tell you that there's something wrong then you should seek some testing. People ignored me when I said that I was having problems coping and that my son just wasn't right, but now I know that I was right all along, but his childhood has gone to waste now and it's too late - adhd does run in families as well.

You could try the discipline techniques and some omega 3 fish oil supplementation before you head for the doctors.

Good Luck ?

There care subtests in the standard psychological testing that can indicate if someone has ADHD.
I would encourage checking out your expectations of a 3 year old against what is considered normative development. Sometimes when parents become overwhelmed for one reason or another they tend to find reasons outside themselves why they are feeling so frustrated.
I realize it may difficult as a parent to take time for yourself and certain do something that you find rejuvenating. It's important to manage our own stress especially if there are aspects of children that may require additional understanding and patience like ADHD.
Take care of yourself so you can be the loving parent you want to be to your child.
