I don't feel like TRYING anymore?!

Question: I'm a senior in college. This is my last semester of courses. Last semester, I maintained a 4.0 GPA. But now, I seem to have NO motivation towards school. I don't go out and drink a lot, I'm not depressed-- In fact, I'm happier now than I have been in a long time.

I'm studying abroad in Italy this summer and then it's graduation. I'm thrilled-- but this semester is holding me down. I've missed classes due to kidney stones early in the semester, and since, I've lost the desire to make myself go to class and really try.

It's mid-semester. What can I do to bring up my grades and be MOTIVATED? I keep putting things off...I just need a push so that this last semester won't ruin my GPA. Please help!

Whoa, don't sabotage yourself. Maybe you are just a world-class procrastinator, or maybe there is some lingering effect of medication (?) from your kidney stone treatment, or something else that needs sorting out --- but whatever the reason, it doesn't actually matter. You can sort that out in due course, but meanwhile just put one foot in front of the other and go to class. Just get there. Do it repeatedly and then you'll get back in the habit, meanwhile fake it till you make it; you've invested too much effort to stuff up when you're nearly there. YOU CAN DO IT:)

prolly depression

caffiene! or a therepist

Depending what meds they gave you for kidney stones, you may be experiencing a period of low blood sugar. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) can put a real damper on motivation.

Foods that help keep blood sugar balanced are 5 minute old fashioned oatmeal (at least 2 meals a week) and salmon or tuna for the Omega 3. Be sure your meals are balanced and contain good protein. Be sure to have in between meal snacks, and keep your water intake up.

It sound like you are maybe hiding something. Go to class and most colleges have free counselling services on campus so go and talk to them and see where things go. What I do is just try to think after this sememster I get to go to Italy in you case then off to that fantasic job you always wanted.

i'd say check out your schools counseling center. they most likely have free services for students. talking to a trained professional can help you figure out why you feel so unmotivated and fix it so you have the desire to do well again. don't let all your hard work go down the drain!!

Being ill with the kidney stones probably took more out of you then you realize.
Just do the best you can this semester and don't push yourself to get another perfect 4.0 GPA. You may have to settle for less than that this time.
Take a vacation after this semester and get your health back.
Plenty of sleep and healthy whole foods.

Italy is your motivation! How lucky that you get to go! Go back to what made you do well before, were you very structured? It's difficult to start up again after a break, especially after an illness, but you do have several things to look forward to....travel and graduating! Get plenty of sleep, eat well, and keep your goals in mind. Good luck, and have fun in Italy!

Keep your eye on the goal. It's normal to get burned out. Talking to other people who are in similar circumstances usually helps. Make sure you are spending time with friends and just enjoying life a little.

Here's a blog by one of my former students. She's also in Italy. Maybe you can post a comment and give her your contact info. She's VERY upbeat and fun to be around:

Make sure you are eating healthy, taking a 30 minute walk each day, and getting plenty of sunshine.

Aerobic exercise will increase your overall health and create motivation in you.

I really hope you do get it together and keep your grades up. If you don't you will regret it for the rest of your life, always wondering what you could have accomplished if you would have done your best.

See the end of the light and what you want to see and set the goals and steps you need in order to get there.

It is never too late to get a good grade talk to your teachers get on their good side and fill them in in what's happening in your life now .Just arrange a private meeting and talk about your physical problems and ask them to give you extra work to raise your grade up.

When the body is sick it is not so easy to over exercise the mind. If you need to take a different route and cut back on study so be it, as all is not lost. You will learn what you have to learn another way. Be thankful for the physical help.

Every student known to man goes through what you are experiencing now. Congratulations for being an excellent student first of all. It sounds like this field that you are taking seems to fit you. Your health is affecting your motivation at this point. I had my gall bladder out while I was in my second year of college and I finished my program with a 3.75. I was very happy. This will open up opportunities for you that you might not otherwise have if you don't complete the program. Make up your mind now if you want this. Keep doing what you did in the past. Study, study, study, and take care of yourself. Don't only do it for yourself, but for a future relationship you will have. No one can take away what you have learned in school. It will always be part of who you become. I still want to complete my B.A. at University. I am in third year Psychology. I am encouraging you to continue and do the best you can. Get the medical attention you need so that you can focus on your education. Good luck.
