First panic attack in three years, out of the blue--WHY>?!

Question: I used to have panic attacks on a near daily basis from my teens on. I was on medications, in support groups. Then slowly they just went away. Last week, I got one that lasted 5 days..palpitations, shakey, intolerant of others. Then it just went away.

I'm concerned that it is going to return. What causes these? I've been without medication and doing well for years.

I believe stress and new situations, like that surprise party. maybe stress, stinkin' thinkin' before going ..The Unknown" I have anxiety attacks. That incredible hot feeling, mixed with severe crazy thinking.. You may not have another one, they usually don't come around when you live a routine life and try to be scheduled. I get them when I take on more than I should. I have to allow myself my own time, without a lot of stimulation.. worrying triggers them or unable to solve the worrisome ideas. this is just my world, I hope it helps.

It could be because you were subconsiously triggered by something either interior or exterior. Triggers can be memories, feelings, and /or events that correlate with the past panic attacks.

panic attacks are caused by an increased adrenaline signaled by ur brain to ur bosy. Your bosy goes into a fight or flight mode and almost goes into shock. I started getting pani attacks when I was 5 and had them for years. They stopped around age 10 and I didnt have another one for 8 years. Once I turned 18 they happen again and a lot. If you feel that they are returning more and more frequently than I would suggest going back on an anti depressant

You had a panic attack that lasted for five days? I don't even think that is possible. They typically last ten-fifteen minutes.

That aside, it sounds like you have panic disorder. If you don't know the cause of a panic attack and you have them frequently then you almost certainly have panic disorder.

The problem is that you don't know the specific trigger for your panic attacks, so we can't tell you want causes them. That is the key feature of panic disorder. If you know what causes them, then you have a specific phobia instead. I could tell you some of the biological and genetic theories for the cause but it won't help you get over it. Plus they are shaky and incomplete theories.

Try seeing a therapist. They do something called Panic Control Therapy these days which is supposed to work wonders, even better than medication in many cases. They will teach you to control yourself during panic attacks and you should be set for the rest of your days. You may never be panic attack free but you should be able to greatly reduce the number and severity of the attacks.
