Well, if you were an adult you would be diagnosed with major depressive disorder and put on medications. Since you're so young it's hard tell if you're just going through a difficult phase or if you developed a mental illness young. Developing a mental illness at the age of 9 is rare, it usually doesn't start until your late teens, early 20s. Don't stress yourself out over it.

Your problem is definitely not normal, however. Nobody should be depressed for five years, no matter what their age. It's serious and you need to see your school counselor.

Your parents sound like idiots, don't listen to them, get help.

Try extremely normal if you are telling people how you feel and no one will help.

Reach out to a school counselor. If you do not know your school counselors, talk to your teacher(s). He/she/they can engage someone to help you.

Take care of yourself first. Good luck :)

Are u taking your medication? I assume you have been diagnosed?

Are you seeing someone as to why you are depressed, I'm pretty sure I read that childhood depression stems from a trauma in your childhood.

I felt depressed when I was younger, I'm 19 now, but from about 12 onwards I belived I was the unluckiest person to be alive etc etc but I honestly think that is part of growing up. That disapeared about 3 years later.

I think depression can last as long as you let it! I am just overrcoming my postnatal depression now after 8months and i literally feel as if the world is brighter!

Honestly, you can beat this! 5 years can be normal but not if you beat it! And you can! Talk to your parents more! You need to open up to someone you can trust! :) good luck x

yea its completely normal your not alone im 14 and im extremely depressed

No. If your depressed for more then 2 weeks you should seek some professional help to minimize any further upset...

There is nothing normal about depression. It is caused by energetic imbalance in the brain. It has a simple solution.

My advice is that you start the omega 3 diet.I have researched omega 3 acids for 2 years and performed a very successful experiment on myself and few of my volunteer friends.Few months of the omega 3 diet i cured my stress[and/or depression] problems permanently and significantly raised my intelligence, improved memory, sight, reflexes[and many other known and unknown benefits] and without any drugs or supplements in the form of pills.I am continuously making notes about the diets effects and new effects i am discovering every few months. It has given me complete emotional control.
.

Take two table spoons of grinded flaxseed[rich with omega 3]a day[with a glass of water] and in a few months you will start to notice significant improvement in your mental health[you will become more psychologically stable, among other things].Use a coffee grinder.Whole seeds cannot be digested by the hydrochloric acid in our stomach only grinded seeds.A fact and not a assumption. You have nothing to loose only gain by it.There are many articles on the internet about the omega 3.2 years ago before i started the diet i did not feel so stable or happy how i feel today.

Also.Take 30 grams of grinded almonds a day. They contain b2 vitamin that is a essential part of our mental balance. It will increase your intelligence and concentration if you consume it daily.

Growing up is difficult. You shouldn't be feeling bad at all. You sound like you need to talk to someone to try to get your feelings in order so that you can learn how to deal with different situations. Have you tried talking to a school councilor or minister? How bout your parents? How about your doctor? Depression is a treatable condition and you may need treatment. Ask your parents to take you to the doctor and perhaps he can give you references. Also think about talking to your school nurse. Do a little googleing and find out information about depression. But do try to find someone to talk to. You know you can walk into any church, member or not, and talk to the minister. If you decide who you want to talk to and you don't agree with what they are telling you or it isn't helpful, talk to someone else. You have to find the right person because not just everyone knows what your solution may be. Hope you feel better and very soon.

i've been diagnosed as having major depression in 1999 ...9 years ago.i am under psychiatric care the whole time.many medication changes.but my case is much different then yours honey.my husband committed suicide after we had an argument.at 14 baby you have so much to live for.has mom taken you to the doctor?did something happen to you when you were little?talk to somebody.

I was depressed pretty much my whole life. It can be a long-lasting thing. Are you open to counseling? There are different kinds of therapy so if you go that route shop around for what is best for you. If you can't afford counseling you can probably get it free through a local hospital or health clinic.

No. As a person who has dealt with clinical depression for most of my life,I'd say you need to have your personal doctor refer you to a psychiatrist immediately. As a layman who has no training in this type of illness, I'd guess that you may have a need for treatment with drugs that can change your life completely by correcting an inhereted chemical imbalance in
your brain. Don't hold back for any reason- antidepressants are the most widely prescribed medicines in the United States.

I've been depressed my whole life, so yes it's possible. You've just got to seek professional help, believe me, it'll be a great deal of help.

Dysthymia fairly commonly exists for many years. Major depression often exists for 6 months-2 years. In the young, depression may exist longer. You should get treatment for depression now. Childhood depression is nothing to mess with, but many parents mistake it for "just a phase". Untreated it can cause lots of pain in adulthood. There are many scary things said about the treatments. People like to make it seem more risky than it is. The drugs are often worth the risk. Prozac, however, I don't think should be given to younger patients. My mistrust of Prozac has nothing to do with the warnings about suicide. I just don't like the common side effects of the drug and the fact that it doesn't work as well as others. You may not really even need medication. You may just need a supportive adult; many people do.

I was the same way...in fact I've been depressed for the majority of my life. I remember having my first bout of depression at age 6....it sucks. Be careful with antidepressants some have nasty side-effects and can make depression worse.
They all work differently for different people. I'm on prozac for severe anxiety, severe ocd, and moderate to severe depression. Prozac at times made me suicidal-I tried to kill myself twice (no one knows thank god). I'm satisfied with prozac it just has nasty side-effects. Go on a mood stabalizer while on antidepressants!!
