How can I get over my depression, before it ruins my future?!

Question: My whole life, I've struggled with depression (I'm 17 now). But lately, my depression has become like a giant stone around my neck, and I can't seem to bear its weight. For the past 6 weeks, I've skipped my 1st period class because I can't get myself out of bed in the morning. And I'm failing all my other classes because I can't seem to gather enough energy to do my assignments.

The high-school counselor told me that if I don't shape up and start passing all my classes, I'm going to fail my senior year and not graduate on time; as desperately as I don't want that to happen, I don't know how to deal with my depression well enough to overcome it and do what needs to be done.

If anyone has any advice on how to, at the very least, push one's depression to the side in order to get on with one's life, I'd be very grateful.

Oh if you could only push the depression aside, drug manufactures would go belly up. Depression isn't just a state of mind it's a chemical imbalance in the brain and medication usually helps to alleviate that after a few weeks. Therapy is another useful tool. getting some of the overbearing weight out of you, and expressed to someone who will understand....helped me.

There are no over night cures for it, depression happens gradually. So it stands to reason to get the best of depression, that too will take some time. But don't ever give up hope. Reach for a better life, a life free of depression and you can have it.

Having a support group helps....even if it is just your parents and/or a few friends, it will make all the difference in the world. The best of luck to you.

i am not often a proponent of medication, but in your case, a short-term trial of something could be beneficial. you need something that will treat your depression quickly and effectively so you don't fall victim to it. go see a psychiatrist and talk about short term medication use to help get you through.

The things you can do on your own are exercise, sleep regularly if you can, eat nutritious meals, and force yourself to participate in the things that used to be fun for you.

It seems that you have been doing this for a while though...sometimes people need help in the form of therapy and sometimes medication. Even if your depression began because of life stressors, research has shown that long-term depression actually changes your brain chemistry. It can be difficult for some to pull themselves out of depression without some help from medication to get your natural hormones stabilized.

Have you talk to your parents about your current state? If I were you, I would do that first, and find out the source of your symptoms (if it really is depression). Have you ever tried to engage yourself into activities to focus your mind? (various lessons, sports, etc.) Hope it helps.

Well I know from experience you cant ever really "get over" depression. I have delt with it most of my life, I try to look at the positive things in life. I do things that will make me happy. There is also alot of medication that will help you. Also if you get out and do things, exercise, it will help you, even though I know you dont feel like doing it. Maybe you should see a conselor other than the one at school, talk to them about your problems and see if they can help. It has helped me to get out side durring the day. Hope this helps. Feel better.

Dear, you need professional help, and I mean that in a positive way. If you have any issues, talking to a therapist can help you. There are times when medications have to be considered, and they can help you. I suggest a therapist first. If they can help you, they will, or send you to someone who can, if meds are required. I do not know your mental status, and I am no way in a position to assume anything or a professional, so I suggest finding a good therapist. You will be surprised how much they can help. A chemical imbalance could be the problem. There is no shame in seeking help. It's a shame when there is help out there, and one does not seek it. It is admirable that you see a problem and are wanting to do something about it. I wish you the best.
