autism is not an idiots disease. it is a person who has not come out of himself (introverted) some people with this can go through their lives and stay introverted but others can learn to come out of themselves.sometimes they can be extrmely bright as they think a lot inside their heads and therefore a lot of information can get through. socially speaking your friend is still in herslef and will come out more with coaxing. socail skills can be learnt form watcing others.
According to Wikipedia:
"Some adults show modest improvement in communication skills, but a few decline; no study has focused on autism after midlife."
So, I guess it could go either way. However, core difficulties will still remain.
