Do you think people are mistaking normal sadness for depression these days?!

Question: Everyne goes through up and down periods, it's a normal part of life, no one can be happy all the time. Do you think many people are feeling sad and assuming it's depression because depression is getting so much press in the media these days. I learnt when i was at school that depression is a period of intense sadness that lasts for a period longer than two weeks. Also, it is a mental illness. not the normal lows of human emotion.
What do you think?

What do you think?

Yes - you're right. Depression is the new "buzz" diagnosis these days, but it needs to be checked thoughly with each person as well. From someone who has depression, I was sad for a long time. I knew I was unhappy, even though my life was great. All the checks came back as severe depression & anxiety. Usually with real depression there are other issues along with it that go hand-in-hand. A lot of the time, those people with depression don't actually admit it. They hide their feelings so others don't know how bad it is.
There are lots of factors these days that make people feel "sad". Media show more bad things on TV these days, and not the good stuff. We are living in a tiem where people are shown more of the hardships / issues than the positives that are happening. If we all take a look at the positive more than the negatives, it may seem more and more that we're not depressed / sad, but have a more positive outlook on life.

yes, as soon as they feel sad, they think the world is over, oh boohoo, something didnt go their way

yeah i do think so...
it's really depressing ha ha
but seriously,
people today are wimps...
i know i am not innocent i have my problems,
but it just seems like someone is in a bad mood,
then they have to go to a councilor and get all these happy pills and stuff...
it's ridiculous

Not me. I always know the difference. Every spring, when the birdies are cheeping and the flowers are popping up and everything is fresh and new, I get depressed and hate every last thing and I wish springtime would go away.

When springtime itself makes you sad, it's depression. I used to love spring, but now it always makes me a little nervous because I assume I'm going to get depressed until summer (which is odd, because I hate summer. One would think I'd get depressed in summer since I hate it anyway, but that's not the case.)

Yes, I Think so

I would say so, yes. People nowadays need to get a grip.

I think the drug companies who are making millions, want people to think everything is depression. Sad things make us sad for awhile. If you can't bring yourself to get out of bed in the morning, keep yourself neat and clean, or leave your house, you might be depressed. Ohterwise, you're probably just sad about something.

I think when people get a little down they tend to go straight for the pills. It's normal for people to be sad sometimes, but when this sadness actually interferes with daily functioning then there's a problem.

Dpression is a type of weakness.you feal like not to get up. feal not to work. you like to remain lying where you are.though it comes through sadness or you can say it is a very advance stage of sadness, depression is because of physiolgical changes in the body. sadness is dueto mental set up.

I don't think so. People who diagnose depression use objective measures to test for depression and aren't likely to diagnose someone with depression unless they have it.

In terms of people using the word "depression" interchangeably with the word "sad" maybe that is more common than it used to but when it comes to people actually walking into a psychological clinic demanding anti-depressants aren't likely to walk away with them unless they actually are depressed.

Absolutely. I'm an RN and I see people -everyday- that have a diagnosis of "depression" and are even taking some pretty hefty meds for it. I think anymore these days we are more inclined to take a pill to "make it better", when really.. all we need to do is look to ourselves to figure things out. I get down too.. but ... unfortuantly.. that's LIFE!! Right?!

This happens.

Happiness is their nature and it's discovered here and now where they are not....

thus, they can expect depression.

Others have real depression. For them the issue remains but they also need medications.
