How can I explain to my twelve-year-old friend that not all emos cut themselves?!

Question: I have a friend who's only 12 and she wants to be emo. I told her that I'm a emo too and she asked me "do you cut yourself or have anorexia" and I told her "No!" She says that a lot of emos at her middle school cut themselves but I don't want her to hurt herself at all. How can I explain to her that not all emos are into self-mulitation and eating disorders and stuff?

Please tell your twelve-year-old friend's mother about this conversation so she can get proper help.

Or talk to your school counselor or school nurse about your friend so the counselor can call her mother.

"emos" are attention-seekers. Sorry, but they do cut themselves for attention.

She is looking at emo as a hallmark of grouping herself to be "unique" for her age.

You cannot explain to her, even though you had been through it, but you are not a trained expert. But you can get a school counsellor to talk to her.

No, actually people cut themselves becuase that is how they decide to deal with their feelings.
Most people with eating disorders have lives that are "out of control" and food/what they put into their body is the only thing they can control.
I hope you are able to convince your friend that neither one of these things are healthy, good or attractive. Good Luck!

Tell her that some are more adjusted than others.
Why do some drunk people drive and some do not?
They choose not too

just tell her emos dont cut them selfs they are loser wannabe goths

Just encourage the cutting so hopefully there will no longer be questions like this.
Just remember, cut along the tracks and not across. ;)

wow. she's 12 and already want to have a label?
tell her parents that she is trying to look cool
because everyone else is doing it and wants to
cut her wrists and become anorexic.
also contact her school and inform the principal
that there's an epidemic of suicidal middle schoolers.
there will probably be multiple therapists coming in to talk to the whole school about this. it's a ve ry dangerous situation.

you can't be emo though. you're not a clothing style or music genre. everyone is emotional. being "emo" is what mocks people like me who do suffer from an actual mental disorder. i have bipolar disorder and am a severe manic. it's not cool to disrespect people like me.

you both need some help.

Explain to her that emo is just a style and a stereotype and you don't have to cut yourself or hurt yourself at all to have that style. Just wear tight pants, retro shirts, and have that huge *** bang over your eye and tada! Emo.

Cutting and anorexia are serious problems and teens should stop pretending it's just a trend. Cat scratches aren't cuts =\ and not eating is unhealthy. Doing either just because you want to fit a trend makes you look like an idiot and doesn't make people like you, it makes them view you as a moron that can't handle anything. It proves that you can't live life for yourself and need other people's attention to live properly when that is so not the right way to live.

By cutting yourself and claiming to be anorexic as a trend pulls the attention away from the people who actually need it thus we'll watch more and more teens die because people choose to be selfish and think it's cool. More people will die of starvation and might commit suicide because that's the only way they believe they can get attention or look good. They are really bad disorders that I'm tired of people pretending they have... it's annoying.

Explain to your friend that you really care about them and don't want them to hurt themself because they don't have a serious problem and fitting a trend is lame =\

Sorry but I'm extremely bitter about this topic. Hopefully someone else is willing to be nice to your friend.

Cause I honestly wanna kick your friend in the face =D Which isn't the best way to go at all! Doesn't stop me from wanting to though.

i never concidered myself "emo" and in fact i find the whole emo thing a bit goofy. but i did cut myself when i was in highschool. this was before it was a trendy thing to do, and no one knew really what it was and no one talked about it.
looking back it was stupid and dangerous.

cutting and eating disorders are all about feeling a lack of control in life, and these things provide that sense of security/control over what u r doing.

i would tell her that people who are emo are not all the same. just because those people think that what they are doing is cool doesn't make it right or cool.

the fact that either or these things are concidered cool is rediculous. but thats not the point.

i dont know much about it, but are there any positive emo role models out there? is there anyone that's emo that she can look up to that doesnt do either of these things? maybe if u r emo she could hang out with u and your friends and see that there are people who are emo that also have relatively pain free food filled lives.

i would tell her that if she wants to be emo because she likes the music, or the dress, or any valid reason, then she should go for it.
but if she wants to be emo because the "cool" kids are, then that's not a good enough reason.

also, i would be careful that if she does become emo, then she will hang out with these non-eating cutters and possibly feel pressured to start doing the same.
if she is already hanging with the emo kids that she wants to be like, then i would just try to talk to her.
sometimes kids that age just want to talk to someone who will really hear what they are saying, not just listening to the words.

You need a good analogy, like "not all cops eat donuts," or "not all shop teachers are missing a finger."

Or "some cut themselves, others just look mopey, others write crappy poetry." might work?
