Is this from taking the depo shot, or a mental illness?!

Question: Okay, I asked this in Women's Health but didn't really get the answers I was looking for.

For people who do not know what depo is, it is a form of birth control. I have been taking it for a year now, so that means I've had three shots.

Everything was fine for the first two times taking it. But after the third time, which I took at the end of february, things have been getting pretty bad. Mostly with my mental health.

I've been veryvery anxious, and have strong bougths of paranoia. Also, I have EXTREME mood swings. One minute I'll be screaming or snapping at someone, and the next I'll be curled up on my bed crying my eyes out.

I've been thinking that I have a mental illness, like GAD or Bi-Polar disorder. But, could these just be very, very bad side effects?

Note: I am only seventeen.

Since it does mess with your natural cycle of hormones it could be the shot. But unless you go off of it and have it out of your system for a while, it is hard to say if it is the drug alone.

If you are having severe psychological symptoms you may benefit from therapy to help you deal with the situation.

As a side note: the FDA has expressed reservations about long term use of birth control drugs, citing that no drug is ever recommended to be taken when a person is not ill and in dire need. All drugs can have adverse side effects over time, even common substances can have this. If you think it is the shot, you'll want to think about your long term health as you make choices about family planning, sexual activity, etc.

You need to go see a doctor, the sooner the better. Good luck!

it could be bad side effects because birth control deals with hormones. talk to the doctor you're getting your shots from, and then contact a mental health doctor just to be evaluated and to be on the safe side.

do a search for DEPO side effects on google.

If you see a common thread, maybe switch to more conventional birth control.

Really, you sound pretty much like any other 17 year old girl.

OK I had the same type of symptoms. I came off of Depo and about two weeks after I should have had a shot I felt less stress in my live. I was sleeping better too and I didn't see to be as bitchy.

I really didn't see it when I was taking the shots but really noticed after i stopped.

Good luck!

could be either or both. see your doctor.
hormonal bc sucks in my opinion. why take medication when you're not sick. but then again, who wants to have unplanned babies lol.

with all the hormones, it sure could be the shot. i would call your doctor right away and get in to see him. let him know what's been going on with you and ask him to make it better!
also, if you're only 17, your body is still growing and changing. you're probably going through things at school that affect your emotions. the shot could really be affecting your developing body. your doctor may recommend a switch to something like birth control pills.
