Is bipolar disorder a true disease or a concoction of traditional medicine?!

Question: Every other organ of the body that does not function correctly is considered to be diseased, and the person is said to have a disease. Bipolar is a disease of the organ called the brain. Neurontransmitters are involved as are ion channels, calcium channels, GABA, etc. Untreated there is a loss of grey matter long-term. It is very real. Medication makes a huge difference. Be glad you don't have because at times it sure ain't easy.

Definitely a true disease.
Not something made up to get your money
Usually runs in families and a person can have this as well as other mental disorders at the same time, it's common for someone with bipolar (or any other mental disorder) to suffer from more than one.

It's being seen in alot of children now, usually they are being raised in homes that aren't stable or by parents with the disorder.

Bipolar is a brain disorder, not a disease. It's treated with meds.

Oh it's for real alright!

Check out some facts on the National Institute of Mental Health page:

i wouldn't say disease... its a disorder. Some ppl just mentally deal with things diff ways. Some days i don't wana get out of bed, see any one, do anything or even be awake for that matter. Some days i jump outta bed bouncing off the friggin walls ready to greet the day. I cant explain it so i just deal with it. I take no meds or anything else, i just cope best i can.

It is indeed a mental illness of severe mood swings like someone psycho who is evil & deadly one minute, then laughs happily & acts like nothing's wrong the next. It can be treated with medicine.

Bipolar has existed prior to traditional medicine, as in the case of Beethoven or Van Gogh.

It is a true chemical imbalance in the brain, usually treated with lithium

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness or mental disease. No one is sure what causes it (no one knows what exactly is wrong in the brain), and there is no test to determine if someone has bipolar disorder. The diagnosis is made by telling a psychiatrist your symptoms, and they will determine if you are bipolar or not. Persons with bipolar disorder experience random mood swings that can last any length of time. Sometimes stress or an addiction triggers an episode. People can be manic, depressed, or both at the same time (a mixed episode). Manic persons have racing thoughts, increased energy, decreased need for sleep, euphoric feelings, are often delusional, and may even have hallucinations. Manic persons often abuse alcohol and/or drugs, go on spending sprees that can be financially catostrophic, and are hypersexual and may become sexually promiscuous, commit adultery, etc. Depressed persons have decreased energy, feel guilty about things it doesn't make sense to feel guilty about, feel worthless and like life is not worth living, and may be suicidal. Persons with mixed episodes have racing thoughts, increased energy, hypersexuality, and decreased need for sleep (characteristic of mania), but their thoughts are depressing, and they may be suicidal and may have repeated panic attacks. About 20% of people with bipolar successfully commit suicide, and many more make attempts. There is no cure for bipolar disorder, but medications can help with the various symptoms.
