Hey,

You are not weird, what you are doing is not unheard of or nasty. Most people who pull out their hair like this do it because they are under a lot of stress or have anxiety issues- are you under any pressure right now?

I'm sure it goes hand in hand with obsessive compulsive disorder, where you develop habits you cannot seem to resist or get rid of, often acting out these rituals to gain a sense of control control- in the same way people restrict their food or avoid the cracks in the pavement..

Anyway try these websites:

As for eating you hair, that is called "trichophagia" and like someone else said, if you leave this untreated it can become life threatening in severe cases.

have a look at this case study:

There are lots of ways to stop this, but the best option would be seeking a therapist (i see one to help me with anxiety. You know, seeing a therapist is a great way to helping yourself become a strong and balanced individual in a safe and unbias environment.) good luck! :)

It is an unexplainable habbit. I have a bad habbit of scraping the skin off around my thumb nails. It get so bad sometimes that it bleeds but it doesn't bother me. I have been doing it since childhood.

wow crazy u should get help for this

Why can't you go to a doctor? because you're embarrased? Trust me, this isn't something you can just stop on your own. Tell your parents you need to see a doctor before it gets worse k?

why can't you go to a doctor?
See the school counsiler

i actually was watching a show on this the other night, and this is a real disease, but luckily you can gt medicine to cure it. my friend has this, and she pulls out her eyelashes and she cant stop. the disease is called "Trichotillomania"
good luck!

Try chewing gum, or something else instead. And for pulling out the hair, a lot of people I've known have done things like pulling out eyelashes for a period of time, but eventually stopped.

honeslty...i think you need to get help, or at least tell your parents about it, and see what they say about it

Gradually grow out of the habit. Tell yourself you're not going to touch your hair for an hour one day. Then two hours. Then a whole day. If it helps, give your hands something to do, like a physical puzzle or a ball to play with.

Maybe you could put all of your hair up like in a bun or a pony tail or you could use alot of hair spray so if you start sucking on it it will taste bad and you'll stop.

yes! i used to do the very same thing. i would be sitting there and my hands would just go to my head, pulling stands and stains out. well i stopped when i saw this girl in the hospital;e. she had a clump of hair in her stomache. from then on i stoped. you can e-mail me at naudia_headen@yahoo.com if you have more questions. oh they said that it was called ''Trichotillomania" or something.

sounds like you have a compulsive disorder and you need to see a Doctor.....you are lacking vitamins

i have a friend that pulls out his eyelashes... its just been a habit of his that he's had for quite a few years..

you need to condition yourself somehow to not do it.. i'm not really sure what because its your hair so you cant really do much there.. but find something that will irritate you so you will turn away from doing it so then eventually you will train yourself not to do it

I have read about this, do search on google.

i know you might not like how it looks for a while, but cut your hair real short so its harder to just pull out. it will grow back really soon and after cutting it short you might not want to even pull it once its long again. hope it helps! good luck!

The name escapes me, but this is not something you're alone with. It's tricha-something-or-other and it's a legitimate psychiatric problem, more common in females.

Hate to say this, but you do need to see a doctor to get the bottom of this. Please talk to your parents about this. It can get so bad that you're bald.

You absolutely MUST see a doctor. The hair can form a ball in your stomach and you can DIE. I'm not making this up... I've heard of it happening before. So, first see a gastroenterologist for the physical problems and then go see a psychiatrist about the psychological problems.

You mentioned that you "can't" see a doctor. I think you are just saying this because you don't want to discuss the problem with your parents. You really need to tell them or tell someone else who can take you to the doctor. Try writing them a note or showing them this page if that will make it easier.

Well, I've never been through your situation, but it can be defeated! Maybe try showing gum instead of hair. I don't know if your Christian or not, but the best advice I can give you is to take this to the LORD. Study the Bible finding stregthening verses that will help you defeat the temptation to pull out your hair. Love you lots, God Bless, and I will be praying for you! :)

what the ****.....

Hello hun,

Take a look at this page http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/ask_the_doct...

It talks about symptoms, possible causes and treatments.

Don't be afraid to go to your doctor. Tell your parents about it. You might not necessarily need drugs, but the use of cognitive behavioural therapy - where they teach you to modify the erratic way you think - might help you cope or completely remove the disorder.

Good luck

This is not common-but you are not the only person who does this...I actually learned about it in psychology class....take a look at the article i've referenced

Chew on something else. You are just replacing chewing one thing with another, but it works. A friend of mine started chewing on her hair, and after a couple of years she found this lump on her side. Turns out, the hair that she was chewing ended up as a wad in her stomach, that they had to surgically remove it.

It sounds like there is something else going on, and that's why you are doing what you're doing. Go see a therapist, and see if that doesn't help.

You're already half-way to healing yourself because you realize that YOU NEED HELP. But, you don't need a doctor; you need discipline. Start by telling yourself that you're harming yourself and stop cold turkey. Start with 2 hours of NOT PULLING OR CHEWING HAIR. Reward yourself for stopping for 2 hours. Then make it 4 hours and again reward yourself ... and so on. Please consider asking God to help you. It's a free consultation with God and I guarantee that you'll stop. Good luck.

You're probably going to need to consult a doctor who can refer you to a psychiatrist.
It sounds to me like you've got trichotillomania, which is just a big word for compulsively pulling your hair out.
You haven't been doing it for very long compared to a lot of people with trich, which is a good thing, so there's probably no permanent damage so far.
I'd really talk to someone about it, before it gets worse, because there are so many ways to fix this and treatment is easier than just living with it and wearing a lot of hats.
It's more than a little embarassing to admit something like this, but you have to get help from someone before you do irreversible damage to your hair.
