Its okay my granny is over 56 and has to have the tv on to sleep! Its normal I mean i'm not scared of the dark I love horror movies but im not... but

its fine! the dark can be scary for people because
not knowing what is in the dark can creep people out

you can get a nightlight I know you may think you're to old for one but you're not :] im 16 and i dont think its odd for a older person to be scared of the dark.

You can also remember tell yourself everynight before you go to bed "Nothing is in the dark everything is fine"
somthing like that?? and maybe it'll get better?

:] idk I hope i helped

u should go on TrueLife (that MTV show). i think they'll help u conquer ur fear.

I'm 37 and was still scared of the dark - try turning the lights out and counting see how many you can count to each night without feeling scared - bet you'll get better - each night try to beat your last you'll find you tire your mind and fall asleep

It is some type of mental illness Are you seeing someone about your mental health. I knew a grown woman (in her 40's) who was afraid the boogie man was under her bed. I am NOT kidding...I am dead serious. She conquered that fear with therapy.

I had the same problem through adulthood. Until I had children. I couldn't stand having all the lights off. I slept with a nightlight even!
But when you have kids, you have to set all that aside. When my newborn son would cry from his room, I would get up in the dark, pick him up, go to the living room and breastfeed. I never turned the lights on because I didn't want to disturb his sleep cycle any more than it already was. I had been getting up with him for about a week before I realized that I no longer needed the lights on. Now he is 7 and I have no more problems with the dark. Its a bit weird how you set yourself aside when it comes to your kids.
You'll get over it. Something (or someone) will come along and you will forget all about your fear. I hope this helps!

oh gosh i'm with you on this one and im 36...im ok if i control the light going off but if theres say a power cut i freak out...i think it probably is down to scary films..i am better than i was i dont have to sleep with the light on anymore..my way of coping was to talk to myself(not literally out loud)i rationally think about fears that come in to my head...like someone under the bed or something easily as stupid and think why on earth would someone be under the bed..and if someone is as sad as to hide under my bed then they really do need to get help not me..lol...seriously try it you talk yourself into thinking your being stupid...

Well, you're not alone. I haven't really been unable to sleep without a light since I was young. I've always been somewhat afraid of the dark, I can't stand to look around at shadows when it's dark. However, I recently made the mistake of reading forum posts on sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis is a condition where you wake up completely paralyzed for a while and during the time you often have auditory/visual hallucinations. One common hallucination is an old woman. Sleep paralysis is also called old hag syndrome. Other hallucinations people experienced were shadowy creatures, demons, corpses, severed heads with glowing eyes, and all kinds of freaky stuff. Sleep paralysis is also accompanied by feelings of having something press down on your chest, or suffocating. Sometimes the visual hallucinations match these feelings. One guy said he saw something dismember is grandmother, and then it start strangling him. After reading that late at night I couldn't sleep without the light on. I couldn't the next few days either. After a while it just got to the point where I was used to sleeping with a light on. At least I don't have to look at shadows anymore and if I have a nightmare I won't wake up in a dark room(I don't have a light by my bed that I can turn on either). So yeah, I've got nichtophobia now. I don't think it's that dangerous at the moment, kids always sleep with the light on
