Shy is when you're reserved. I don't think that you are intentionally keeping things bottled up. You just don't put it all out there at once. There's a difference with refusing to be open and being careful. Possible characteristics are:
Quiet
Nervous
Anxious
Modest
Secluded
Watch the person. See how they act in new and different situations. If they are any of the above mentioned then chances are they are shy. Don't worry. It usually disappears once the person is comfortable.
