Does anyone know of anything useful in helping panic attacks besides medication?!

Question: Breathe deeply, remind yourself that it is just a panic attack, and then say "I will not let it win" (I know it sounds corny, but it works for me).
If you know you are going into a situation that will cause an attack, do not go alone. There are times that I am embarrassed by this but most of the time I will not go into a large store unless I have one of my boys with me, because I know that no matter what happens they can take care of me.
If you are at home, find something relaxing ahead of time, so you will know what to do. Read a book, soak in the tub (I recommend as hot as you can stand it). Or what ever else you do that relaxes you.

But, under NO circumstance let the attack control you. Sometimes it's hard to do, but after having to leave 3 stores because I just knew there was somebody trying to kill me, I DECIDED that it would not control me anymore. Without my meds, I couldn't control it, but meds alone will not work either, the meds are 50%, the rest is you. Hang in there make up your mind, and you will defeat this the same way I have.

I am so glad you asked this question, it is great to know that someone else is dealing with this, and thanks for the great advice (I was actually just about to ask the same question, but thought I would search first!!) Thanks so much again. Report It

  • I agree. Deep breaths and not letting it control you is a big step. Yoga and other relaxation techniques would help also.

    coping skills have helped me
