Book addiction?!

Question: I have found books to be my drug. Whenever I get depressed or stresses of life get to be too much, I reach for a book.

I started reading in 3rd grade and I am an excellent reader, and I get emotionally attached to all the characters in my book. It physically hurts me when a book series ends and I have to say goodbye to the characters and the adventures. I get depressed and then reach for another book series.

I always read fantasy books because I want to go to a place where common day troubles are forgotten, because when I read, I feel like I am actually there.

For example, I just finished reading 'Gregor and the Code of Claw' which is a fantasy about a boy who goes to an underground world and is the warrior. I've already read this book about 2 times before, and when ever I re-read it, it's like reopening a wound, and saying goodbye to that world again. This happens with all my books that end.

I know this is getting to be a problem, so how can I stop this addiction?

I know exactly what you mean. It's like the adventures in the book become your own and ending the book is like the loss of a dear friend. You just want it to go on and on so you reread them until you know every word by heart. I do this all the time and am in fact obsessed with reading. It's my drug of choice and since it hurts no one I don't really fret about it all that much. Although I sometimes wish that people could be as great in real life as they are on paper. But I guess I'll have to live with disappointment. Don't stop reading. A good book is a friend that will always be there.

That is one of the healthiest coping mechanisms I've heard of. There is no real problem there, books can be great therapy, I read a lot too.

This is not an addiction, and is not a bad thing either.

Not only is this a common escape for many people, the attachment you describe is also a common one. The good news is that you can move right into another series right after the one ends.

Keep on reading!

Consider yourself lucky...

There are all kinds of ugly addictions that could be plaguing you, at least yours is healthy and doesn't destroy your body.

Plus, most people (if they have half an imagination) feel the same way you do when they read. The purpose of reading is to be INVOLVED in the story.

Don't worry about it, I think you are over-analyzing this a bit...

I have to read every night before I go to sleep or I will go nuts. If I don't have a new book, I will read an old one. Have a nice evening.

well reading too much can hurt your eyes and brain. its just like everything don't do too much of everything. if u get emotionally attatched u should try reading non sad books or if your sad try not to read try to do something else. when i'm depressed sometimes i go be by myself just listen to music or lie onthe couch. i hope this answer helped at least a little. bye!

I used to think that too! *blush* I was very embarrased and didn't tell any one cause I didn't think It was normal. But this is very normal. Books can be a kind of therapy in a way for some people (including myself) and keep doing what your doing. And it's also good for you. But do other things than reading. Get outside and use what you learned from the books you read! :)

dido. books are my heroin :)
