Increased anger and shorter temper?!

Question: For the last 8 or 9 months i'v been having problems with my anger. I find now that I snap too easily when people say something to me. Even if it's a single cocky remark to me, I just lose it. I even let small things which people do wrong get to me.

Im normally a mellow and reserved guy. I have no problem with talking to people and having some fun. I don't go out with friends and start looking for fights in nightclubs. I'm the total opposite when im out and about.

Alot of my friends have said to me that i'v got more aggressive over the last few months and even sometimes get scared that they may say something wrong and that I may hit them. Is there any professional which I can get for this problem. I did have anger management courses when I was at college but I found that it never really helped me. Any comments or suggests are welcome.Emails are also welcome.

A few years back I was on a medication for epilepsy called Keppra and unfortunately the side effects were quite severe. Like you, I had trouble controlling my mood and temper. I've posted a link below as proof of what I'm saying.

I'm therefore wondering whether you're on medication which may be contributing to your change in character. I know it took me several months to realise that the medication was the source of my problem. If you are taking medication at all, it's worth having a look at any information leaflets that came with it. Needless to say, see you're GP if you think this may be the cause.

Diet could also be a factor. Blood-sugar and brain chemical like serotonin are affected by what we eat. Artificial additives and colourings can cause a reaction. There's quite a long list of possibilities in the first link below. Apologies if I'm barking up the wrong tree altogether but I hope this is of some use to you. Best of luck - I hope you're better soon.

Dare I say it could be your hormones? Or have you been taking any medication? I think its your hormones - when you feel like you're getting angry or ready to snap count to 10 in your mind and try to start calming yourself down. It might help good luck!

hiya sorry to here about your problem it must be worrying you,has anything changed in your life over the past while ? do you drink a lot? you obviously are hurting about something and need to get help ,, start the ball rolling now go to g,p, tell him you need help and wish to be referred to a professional also try to take time out just to think and relax ,it kinda hard to suggest things with out knowing your full life story ,but good luck

It could be stress related. See a doctor or get into counciling.

Do you take any form of testosterone - such as for the gym or any other reason? My ex used to do this and he became aggressive and angry. He ended up with huge muscles, but no marriage and no job (he got the sack for his attitude). It also lost him an awful lot of friends.

hhmmm perhaps a change in lifestyle...that could be a new job which is harder than your previous and you are under alot of stress. Or maybe you have had a bad experience to you or the loss of a friend or family member that has affected you mentally thus shortening your temper

U R contradicting ur self by saying that u r not that type of person & then saying that u have done anger management course in the past. Any way, if u r acting this way which is unusual 4 u, u r ur best judge in that u can think over as 2 what has been bothering u that has caused this personality trend change in u. Unless u r honest 2 ur self, u would not come out of it.

In my experience sudden anger can be linked to use of various substances, including alcohol.
Skunk cannabis can lead to aggression in some people.
You don't say how old you are, there is often a link between late teens and early 20s and a sort of inner frustration.
Exercise can be useful as it helps to deal with adrenaline.
Speak to your GP. They might be able to help you.

Anger can have a very negative effect on relationships with the people around you.

This could be frustration with your life and the lack of truly satisfying pursuits. Perhaps your friends are no longer the people you really want to be with any more. It can be infuriating to feel aimless and unfulfilled and lead to unfair attacks on those around you. Obviously it's not their fault but if you feel that they are happy and don't understand your anger and discontent you will be impatient with them.
The answer to these feelings can be elusive but a professional counsellor may be able to help you work out why they overcome you. You need something to totally absorb you, to stretch you, to boost your feelings of self-worth. You sound pretty unfulfilled at the moment.
I wish you good luck in overcoming your problem.
