I wholeheartedly agree with answer number 2 above. I just asked my therapist about this two days ago because I was diagnosed with it 10 years ago and that diagnosis bothered me. This therapist told me point blank that I do NOT exhibit 'borderline personality' traits (as set out in the psychiatric manuals) and it is a diagnosis that really isn't used that much any more and when it was (and sometimes still is) used it is a catch-all for anything and everything that is or could be wrong with a person, when the clinician can't pinpoint something specific. This new therapist of mine really dislikes the 'borderline' diagnosis and said that if someone uses that diagnosis they either haven't done their job or aren't very good at it!

"Borderline personality" is an extremely broad term used when the psychological community can't define what (if anything) is wrong with a person.
BPD is defined in the DSM IV with nine specific symptoms, you must exhibit at least five to be diagnosed with it. It is not a "catch all" diagnosis, it is real, 80% of people diagnosed with it are women, most have a history of sexual abuse. It it a serious, real illness. 8% of BPD's die of suicide. If your therapist doesn't want to treat you, many don't, find someone else. There are new, effective treatments for it, including DBT, which is scientifically tested, and proven to help. Most of the bpd website are dominated by women, they typically ignore posts made by males, which is unfortunate.
