Finding the void?!
Question: ive read books where people are able to completely clear their minds, cutting off all emotions
i have tried doing this many times but it never works
anyway have any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure they don't cut off emotions. They just sort of let them be and don't care. Like, you feel angry, so you basically just say: I'm angry. Yes. I feel anger. Therefore, nothing. It will pass.
I think in order to be able to easily get into the state of mind where you just observe your emotions without responding to them, you should practice meditation.
There are various forms of marshal arts that teach different types of meditation. Work with those skilled in the practice and you will learn the skill much more readily than from reading books.
