What should I expect from a counselor/therapist?!

Question: I am in the 8th grade and I might have to see the school counselor soon because of shyness problems, self esteem, and my depression problems. (its a female counselor) I have seen her around the school and she seems nice and friendly, but yet I am still a little bit nervous talking to someone. What should I expect from this counselor? What things will she most likely discus with me?

Well, I see a counselor every Tuesday.
It's accually REALLY fun.
I look forward to it every week.

Just remember that she doesn't know everything.
She may know some things though, that may help you.
Mostly counselors ask you how you feel.
Glad, sad, afraid, angry and ashamed.
Those are five basic feelings you have.

Counselors help you talk to your inner self.
The idea is that you know the answers,
but you aren't asking yourself the right questions.

she is going to want to talk about your life at home, but wont want you to mention any names. she will ask if you have ever been abused, neglected, sexually violated or exploited. she will probably ask you how you feel about yourself and if you have ever thought about, considered, or attempted suicide.

of course this is all from experience from my counselor when i was in eighth grade and high school. both were slightly condescending and made me feel 5 years old. one of them even made me draw a picture.

my advice to you is to be honest, but only if you are sure oyu can trust this woman. show her that you arent 5 years old, and hopefully she wont treat you like such. i eventually started seeing a real shrink after my issues started getting worse, and i highly recommend it if you can find the right one.

best of luck, take care.

First of all, try to remember that the counselor/therapist is there to help you feel better. When you first go to see her, she will probably ask you some questions to get to know you better. She will probably want to know some of the things that are bothering you at school and at home. Don't be afraid to answer her questions honestly. If for some reason you don't feel comfortable discussing or answering a question, you can let her know and it will be okay. Remember, she is there to help you. Also remember that the counselor will not tell anyone else what you say to her. Sometimes talking to a counselor can really help you feel better and see your life from a happier perspective. Counselors often just listen and provide a safe place to talk. She may not offer to help solve any problems you may have unless you ask her for some help. Good luck!
