If Addiction is a disease, is it also a disease when someone has a desire to....!

Question: constantly shove food in their mouths, play that addicting video game or always run their credit cards over limit? Does gambling, sex and not being able to hear enough Slayer dictate brain addictive disorders? These can be compulsions but are considered addictions if Video games/spending are degraded the well-being of the person. Making them stupid/broke, blind, etc.Is this correct?

The behaviors you name might be considered to be mental illness using the criteria set out by the DSM-4, which is the standard reference used to diagnose those disorders. The behaviors could be classified as Binge Eating Disorder, or Compulsive Gambling, or Impulse Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. In some cases behaviors like sex, drug use and gambling occur in the context of a manic episode of a bipolar disorder. You can separate the two because people that are bipolar have many other mood and behavioral problems even when they are not gambling, eating, etc. The primary criteria are engaging in the behavior to an extent that causes problems in functioning and difficulty stopping the behavior. But are they medical diseases like the flu, or schizophrenia? We know that for a portion of people there is a genetic predisposition. There is a better chance of having an impulse disorder if you have a relative that is close to you that has a similar disorder. We know that people with impulse disorders do well with medicines like antidepressants and with behavioral therapy. But there are other people that just make really lousy decisions and have poor judgment and control. Where do you draw the line? And do some people use "mental illness" as an excuse? You Betcha. Even if you have mental illness you are responsible for treating it so I have little patience for patients that say "I can't help it... it's just the way I am." - GDP

Yeah I think you're right.

Physical or psychological dependency on something is addiction.

Yes it can be an addiction, and a real problem in people's lives and it was the subject of an episode of Intervention.

You are correct. All of these things could become addictions which = diseases. Some are easier to quit then others. And all have some form of treatment one could get help for...

Our addictions are what define us as human beings.Without some sort of addiction,a person would be nothing but a robot.
