My Daughter needs help. Whats wrong with her?!

Question: My Daughter was put in a mental hospital in Feb. Of this year. She was cutting her arms up, feeling deppression, and hearing voices. They held her for 2 days and let her come home they placed her on seroquel 100MG and invega and another anti depressiant. She was doing better (I thought anyways)

Now her dr. took her off everything except the seroquel and uped that to 400MG

now shes hearing the voices again and rocks back and forth and moans not loud but small one come out of her alot and she is super depressed again she talkes to her slef and will have covos with people in her head and think its real. I think more is wrong with her but shes not telling me shes 21 i think it might be schizophrenia

what should I do, or is this all just depression?

Neither invega nor seroquel are anti depressants. Both are anti-psychotics. If the psychosis is a result of the depression itself (rather than a purely psychotic process such as schizophrenia), it probably will not get better unless she is ALSO on antidepressants (in addition to the seroquel).

Unfortunately, you might be looking at schizophrenia here. She is at the right age for its typical first manifestations. The good news, is that schizophrenia is very treatable WITH MEDICATIONS.

It is important that you notify her doctor of changes in symptoms. Clearly, you have not yet found the right combination of medications for her. Please notify her doc of these changes so he/she can recommend either dosage adjustments or medication changes/additions.

Hang in there,

Talk to her doctor. It sounds like pscyhosis of some sort. It could schizoaffective disorder (schiz with mood disorder) or it could be psychotic depression. I imagine there may be a couple other possibilities, too. Btw, Seroquel is an antipsychotic with antidepressant properties. It actually has been approved by the FDA to treat bipolar depression, and possibly unipolar, too. 400mg is not a high dose, so don't be surprised if it is increased. Similarly, don't be surprised if her meds are changed. Determining the right psych med is as much art as it is science.

you think we can figure this out? How about a better Dr.?

This can definately be anything but it might be depression. it seems she has went thorugh a hard time in life. You have to try and talk to her and see whats up. I think that when we are faced with something eveyrone reacts to it differently and maybe what shes been through, her body is reacting to it this way. Everyones different and tell her to hang on.
Good luck

You need to have a chat with her doctor and tell him that she was better with all the tablets, she needs to be kept on the tablets I think, at least for the time being.

Consult your doctor and let her know what is going on. She may have kept her on the wrong medication. She may recommend you to a specialist and I would consult with the specialist. My heart goes out to you as I had to take my daughter in yesterday as I knew she had been on a downward spiral and thank God I was able to get the appropriate help my daughter needs. Now it's up to my daughter to follow through but trust and believe I will be there with her and she will not be alone.

schizophrenia can show up later on in life like teens or adults. my father has it. he has times where he is fine and times where its bad but he does not take medication for it. wich is dangerous. most of the time ppl with this disease will not take there meds becuase of the way it makes them feel and it can also have some weird side effects.. i take it that the mental health unit refered her to some time of therapist or counselor? depending on her age you might want to get a school counselor involved they may be able to help you get a refferal to someone who can help. Drs alot of the time think here take a pill and you will be all better wich is not the case. Try getting her a therapist that work with Bi polar manic depressives it doesnt sound like bi polar but with the drugs she is taking some can make you behave very strangely.

go to a private doctors it may cost but it is worth it. i hope you can find out goodluk

i'm sorry to say so... but it sounds like she wants your attention. Are her cuts shallow (there may be 200 of them) if so that's attention. If she needed stitches for her cuts, then I think you have a real problem.

But for some people those hospitals are like paradise... they feed you, you can do whatever you want, you can punch people, get loads of attention, you can sleep all day, the doctors get you HIGH!!! (on 'medication') , and you meet some more attention seekers that give you ideas on how to seek more attention.

take her off of that medication immediately... that's whats doing most of this. seroquel is horrible.

if her cuts need stitches... then you need to send her back to the hospital. Do NOT OK ANY MEDICATION!!! the meds keep the patients sick, so you buy more!!!! I was on that crap it got to the point of where i couldnt talk, I shook uncontrollably, and I gained over 100 lbs.

Send her to a therapist that you and her enjoy. dont do group therapy or family therapy.

Dont obsess over your daughter, dont continuously be in her face asking what's wrong. Dont buy her things to reward this behavior. But DONT leave her home alone.

please trust me.. i've seen it numerous times. And i've seen many parents try many different things. Remember what you want and what she wants and what the doctor wants may not be what she needs. Doctors will try to convince you to try meds... but remember .. the more meds they sell the more $$$ they make.
