Why are autistic people strange?!

Question: I had an ex roommate who was autistic and very strange in many ways. He had a habit of eating very frequently and was a flat slob. He was clumsy (falling at time without falling over sometime) and was very uncoordinated at sports. He also hated sports and had a strong dislike for college athletes on our campus. He uses his computer all day and does not go out and he has no real friends or a girlfriend. He had a repetitve habit of repeating the same thing that he he said to me or someone days, weeks, or months ago and repeating it to himself. He also would run to authority (an RA, a professor, or a dean) if a student call him a degrading name such as fat ugly or clumsy or if a student hit him instead of dealing with his own problems on his own.

Hello,
Welcome to the world of mental health!
There mind works different. Do you realize there are many mental health issues associated with autism these days??

I would never, ever want my son any other way then he is.

You can't really say that "autistic people are strange" because they're not all the same. It depends on the person. Some people function better than others, some deal with things differently than others... pretty much works the same as it does with everyone else. There are certain traits they share that are used in the diagnosis, but as far as how severe it is, how strongly these things are manifested, etc. depends entirely on the person. As far as I know they don't usually like as much social interaction as other people, though some is usually good, and I think being a little uncoordinated is common, as well. There are other things, too. I'd suggest doing some research on the subject to try and understand it better. I don't want to say too much because I don't know a whole lot about the subject, but I do know that you can't really make those kinds of generalizations based on your experience with just one person.

Autistic people arent strange and you shouldnt talk like that. Autism is a neurological disability that people have no control over and they cant get rid of it. Its a lifelong disability that one is born with or develops before the age of three. Then tend to repeat things, have little or too much sensitivity of pain, no social smiling or back and forth interaction when infants.....and there's many more symptoms..
They're not strange or weird or anything like that they are people who have a disability and you shouldnt make fun of it or think its strange.

Autistic people are not strange!!!!!!!!!! GOD what is ur problem making fun of mentally challenged people that is not right i know u have a freedom of speech but that gives u no reason to be making fun of them i know an Autistic little boy and he isn't weird hes just a little bundle of joy and u should be ashamed of making fun of people like that. Autistic people have a great deal of trouble understanding things in the social environment. This includes both understanding of social cues and conventions, and understanding language. (The primary difference between Autistic Disorder and Aspergers Syndrome is that those with Aspergers are defined to have less severe communication problems and no speech delays.)

Autistic people NOT strange. Do you really know what Autism is??

i am one..i am not

Maybe YOU'RE the strange one.

His normal is what he is as is your normal for you. Have you ever thought that maybe he thought you were a bit strange because you allowed people to get into your personal space? To him normal is what he is doing and who are we to say it isn't? He should go to an authority figure when someone "bullies" him! Just because you make eye contact, carry a conversation or play sports, doesn't make you better than anybody else or look better than others! What I believe to be ugly may be beautiful to the next person.
You should be so lucky to have a good pure person to share space with, but some would prefer one who has more looks than morels. Society never fails to amaze me!!

Because they are austistic and it's a mental problem.
