Is this OCD... or am I just strange?!

Question: Well I have these things that I refer to as "compulsions" and I was wondering if it is OCD or if it is most likely just me. If you have any questions, just ask.

*always keeping things lined up on my desk
*turning lights on and off three times before I go to bed
*checking that the alarm is on three times before I go to bed
*counting my steps when I walk
*looking around the room in a certain way.(Like I have to go from a certain side and end at a certain side)
*walking in and out of a door three times

Yep, they sound like compulsions to me. Talking to a guidance counselor is a good idea.

I have been suffering with OCD since I was six years old (I am now a lot older!) and I have never received any help for it. It has progressively become worse, and in my opinion - has taken over my entire life. So much so, that I can't picture life without my odd little compulsions.

Get help for it as early as you can - don't be embarrassed. Getting help is the way to go.

Remember that I am not a medical professional (yet). But, I do believe that you have OCD, or mabye just an obsession with the number 3.

OMG I used to do those things all the time, I still do! I went to a special doctor, and she said it was OCD, not as bad as some, but a little, before you go to extremes like medication, try to solve it on your own, eventually it wheres off, but it comes back occasionaly. It's nothing to be super concerned about until it effects your way of life. Like I used to think, I can only turn of my light with my ring finger 12 times before going to bed, or, say something 15 times before doing something else, that started to bug be A LOT. Try to get rid of it yourself, but if it doesn't go away, go see someone, they'll tell you the best solution.

Yes !!! I think you may have O C D, Its more common than you might think. You should talk to a counsler...

That does sound like OCD.

I have very "mild" OCD, so I don't count my steps or do things in threes anymore, but flicking the lightswitch three times is definately a sign of OCD. :) But yeah, I organize things when I get bored and hyper (which is all the time) and I am obsessed with making lists and collecting small items that can be stacked or laid out in certain ways...

DON'T WORRY! It just means you're more organized than everyone else! hehe. :p

Well i think everyone has a little OCD, i count how many times I chew on each side of my mouth. You seem to have an obsession with the number 3. Some of it seems strange but if it is not interfering with your life don't worry about it. IF it is interfering with your life go to a physchologist or a doctor, everyone has problems and the doctor's have seen it ALL.

I have bad OCD so I know the facts....this is OCD...I turn the lights on and off about seriously probably about 20 times everytime I turn them off. I always have to use so much shampoo and conditioner cuz I dont feel I did it right and same with body wash...I have to walk in and out a door until I feel it is alright to walk in and lay on my bed. I am always constantly thinking about it and it is terrible its always there and is a terrible annoying thing to have. You are not strange and never think that you are. I understand you so well and I heard this guy on MTV's True life I have OCD say to people who dont have it is weird but to me its very real and that is so true and I hope the best for you I truly do. :)

This sounds like OCD. Not an extremely serious case, but still OCD. When you count the steps when you walk, that is definitely OCD and doing things repetitively until it feels right to you. I am pretty positive that I have a slight OCD problem. I do things several times, like touch the light switch several times until it just feels right or touch buttons several times until it feels right.
OCD is nothing to be ashamed of. If it gets worse, then you might need to see a doctor, but if the rituals that you do are something you can deal with, then don't let it bother you. It would be worse where you wash your hands lots of times or something like that. Mine isn't to that extent. If you feel like you need to talk to someone about it, then do. It will make you feel better and it might even help you. Good luck.

My son has OCD. He is now 18 but since his early teens has done the same things. Turning lights on or off certain amount of times, had to touch certain things when walking by it or he would go back and make sure he touches it. Checking doors and window locks. Double and triples things all the time!! I would say you sound just like someone with OCD.

That is ocd. i have the same problem! My ocd used to be where i would make my mom say okay after everything.

Sounds like it, but nothing major. You're not like washing your hands until they bleed or anything. Probably something to be concerned about, because it could possibly maybe lead to something, but then again what is there that couldn't possibly maybe lead to something? If it doesn't bother you then I wouldn't worry about it, but you went through the trouble of asking a question so I assume it does bother you. My advice is to wean yourself off of these habits. Like if you want to flick the light switch, resist it once, just to prove to yourself that you can and that you're not controlled by these "compulsions." It'll be tough, and probably annoy you until you can forget it, but if you want to kick the habit then that's my advice, at least. Maybe say something to someone if you feel like you need the help or if it gets to the point that it interferes with living productively.
