Is it possible for severe depression to hinder academic performance?!

Question: Yes, totally. Your performance reminds me of my middle son's behavior and his attitude toward education. He would procrastinate to the point that every homework assignment would be late a day, and receive one full grade reduction (two if late another day) -- it's like he was purposely failing, when I know he is fully capable of getting A's and B's. He is smart, but chooses to go off to his friend's house, or he "forgets" his homework at school, when I know the teacher made him write the assignment in his homework journal so he wouldn't forget.

Yes, he suffers from depression and anxiety, possibly ADD as well. He is a victim of a dysfunctional family. He goes to counseling monthly. He has been hospitalized and he is only 11 years old. Yet he sounds like you. He and you fail to realize the future holds your dreams and aspirations.

You both have to set goals: short-term goals, mid-term goals & long-term goals -- to reach those dreams. The schoolwork you underachieve on today could be a precursor to you not applying yourself in the future at your first job out of college. In that job, you may find yourself not advancing up the career ladder fast enough, and thereby fall deeper into depression. Be sure to apply yourself now, reach for the stars, hitting each of your goals along the way, either on time, or better yet, ahead of time. Take that same attitude, fortitude and high achievement into the workforce and be richly rewarded for your efforts. See yourself as a CEO by the time you're 45 and become the CEO by the time you hit 42.

Aim high & you'll hit the stars! Best of luck to you in this now & in your bright future!!!

i would deffinatly say yes because you just dont care enough to do any work.
i used to be severely depressed in grade nine and i didnt do any work and failed pretty much everything

Totally!! Severe depression can affect everything you do! It is something that is treatable though. If you feel you have depression you need to seek help, like a doctor or counselor. Depression can make everything harder to do and you will probably see a drop in grades. But if you get help you can overcome it and find ways to cope with it! A person who has depression needs to stay strong and positive. Hope that answered your Question!!

You can flunk out.. I did, almost, certainly and dont take any IQ tests when in that condition... trust me....

Many studies have shown that children from the ghetto or 3rd world poverty that are under mental duress and abuse, cant think anymore... Thier paralyzed emotionally and intellectually by trauma....

Yes, Yes , Yes....

Yes. One of the symptoms of depression is a lack of interest in your activities. Lack of motivation is another.

You answered your own question. Depression leads to lethargy which leads to procrastination which leads to lower grades which lead to more depression. It is not a circle; it is a nasty descending spiral.
My best to you. You already know the advice which I could give.

Depression effects concentration, motivation and memory so it is absolutely possible.

yes. it sounds like you have the wisedom to do what you needed to do you are just not using it. you do believe in yourself and that is good. You expect to much of yourself just relax and do what you know is the right thing in your heart for each problem in life. even though you are depressed you can still achieve all you want you just have to work for it. you maybe causing your depression by over expectations on yourself. Be proud of your accomplishments and just keep going. Life is not perfect for anyone. You have the skills and the heart to overcome so use them. Don't be so hard on yourself.

I'm currently in college and I have definitely struggled to keep up with my work load during the past couple of years. With so much on my mind and from the fatigue, at times it's very difficult to concentrate on assignments, tests, seminars, etc.
