How to Deal With Daughter With Borderline Disorder?!

Question: My daughter, 42, has borderline and a son, 10. We are keeping him for her. She won't work, she can't live with any man, she gets jobs then quits, asks me for money that gets her nowhere. Her lifestyle is finding anyone who will take her in, then they make her leave or call 911. Then she moves away to sponge off someone else. They kick her out then she starts calling old friends to take her in. She loves xanax and coke and never gets arrested. So she's a borderline druggie type "mom" who says she's going to "get it together" but never does. She has crashed with an old man for a week-he called the cops on her for not having sex with him (told them she stole money). I told her this would happen. He likes to call 911 on her.
They didn't run her license no. All she says about herself? "I made a mistake. I'm a good person."
I'm amazed my H hasn't left. Her son is very nervous about drugs and chews his lip and nails. She can't come here; she's angry, rude, reads emails and won't sleep.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness characterized by pervasive instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior.

This instability often disrupts family and work life, long-term planning, and the individual's sense of self-identity. Originally thought to be at the "borderline" of psychosis, people with BPD suffer from a disorder of emotion regulation. While less well known than schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness), BPD is more common, affecting two percent of adults, mostly young women.

There is a high rate of self-injury without suicide intent, as well as a significant rate of suicide attempts and completed suicide in severe cases. Patients often need extensive mental health services, and account for 20 percent of psychiatric hospitalizations. Yet, with help, many improve over time and are eventually able to lead productive lives.

She needs direct intervention, and perhaps the best way to accomplish this would be through hospitalization. If you go to social services or even the county medical board to seek help perhaps an opening could be found locally (national shortage of bedspace) before she goes on her next "bender." If/when 911 is called they could look up her information and see that intervention is already in place and transport her for evaluation and most likely placement.

Hopefully she can get the help she needs before it's too late to get help. God bless you, your spouse, your daughter, and grandson. Best of luck to you now & in the future!!!
