Oh, dearie!

I have bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder AND good old-fashioned insomnia. It can take a good long time to fall asleep when a person's mind won't quit chattering.

The "tell yourself to stop thinking" thing not only doesn't work but also can cause problems. It's not a good thing to just quash thoughts; they come back like bills in the mail. Instead, acknowledge and release them. Imagine yourself floating on a raft, and every new thought is a ball floating on the water. Notice it, and then let it just keep floating away from you.

I also ADORE Badger Sleep Balm. It looks like something similar to Carmex lip balm in tins of different sizes, and for me it really works when I have trouble sleeping. You just put a little on your temples (I also put it on my wrists) and fall asleep faster.

Cut off the caffeine in the late afternoon or early evening, and have some water before bed. I don't recommend radios or anything like that, because people actually can take longer to fall asleep that way and have less restful sleep when they do. Some teas are said to work. I prefer chamomile, and if it's really bad I like scullcap tea. The latter doesn't taste great--animal crackers or Nilla wafers recommended--but it does calm the hamster-dance mind!

Write it down. Journal it. Then go back to sleep.

my husband has that problem. it helps him to fall asleep listening to music or watching tv so that he's distracted.

Put a pillow between your legs and cuddle into another. Now,
your are comfortable with your head on your normal pillow. train yourself not to think. You will, but tell yourself to stop. It is not hard to get passed this stage and then you will fall into a deep blissful sleep. You have to will yourself to let yourself. Well worth the effort.

Reading the world history book always helps me

I have a lot of trouble with sleeping and what helps me is either a distraction (usually tv) or one of the coping methods that I learned called One-mindfully. Just find one thing to think about, something simple and just think of all of the details you can concerning that thought. It sounds weird, but it works because your mind just starts to wander and eventually you'll doze off.

look up ways to meditate, that really helps.
