I'm so sorry you have to go through that! My boyfriend has social anxiety disorder and agoraphobia...it's amazing he and I ever met :)!

My first advice would be to talk to a psychologist about cognitive behavioral therapy. They'll be able to teach you how to deal with and overcome your phobia in baby steps, which although you may never be fully over it, you'll certainly have a whole new world of opportunity available to you! You might also want to discuss certain medications with them which can help take the edge off of your panicking...Klonopin (sp?) for example only need be taken as you see fit and it will greatly reduce your anxiety within 30 min. Perhaps taking it before starting your drive can help keep you calm as you travel.

If you're unable to afford seeing a psychologist, check online for self-help therapy. Try visiting http://www.paniccure.com/Overcoming_Agor...

You might also wish to try finding back routes to Tampa rather than highways. While sticking to more "small town" areas as you drive you can keep telling your mind that your merely in a part of your own town that you never traveled through before.

Finally, I wish you the best of luck! I know it may seem hopeless sometimes, but you can learn how to deal with your phobia, one day at a time!

tampa is an amazing city!! sooooo much funnnn! youll be missing out on not moving here!

One step at a time. There's no other way *hugs*

I suffered agoraphobia so bad that I couldn't even leave my room, let alone the house. This went on for a year, until one day Mum got sick of it and shoved me out the back door. Once I was outside and nothing bad happened, I was able to work on getting to the letterbox, the fence, the street ... you get the idea?

Incidentally, I now go for long walks, go shopping, and even travel on public transport. I hope that encourages you :)

It's like any phobia. The more you expose yourself to it, the easier it gets :)

i dont have much experience with it... besides i went through a period after being assaulted where i wouldnt come outta my house... and if i did i wouldnt unless someone was with me... then i got tired of it i was fed up with watching everyone else doing things and this guy has me terrified to leave my own house... so i made myself stand outside as long as i could stand and i continued to do so everyday until i felt better... its something ur gonna have to force urself to do and once u do it ull feel on top of the world...

I know two people who have completely overcome agoraphobia and anxiety/panic attacks. The book cited below will help you:

"When Panic Attacks: The New Drug-Free Anxiety Therapy That Can Change Your Life," by David D Burns, MD.
