Do I get enough sleep?!

Question: I am a 16 year old male in High School and I usually sleep from about 2 or 3 in the morning till 6:40 and then go to school and repeat this process every night. I do not feel tired at school or anything and I am rarely sick. My friends and health teacher say I need more sleep but I think I'm fine. My dad hardly sleeps also. We sometimes watch TV together at 1:00 am if he is still up also - I think it's just a genetic thing. What do you think? Thanks.

For someone your age the normal amount of sleep for each night is supposed to be between 7-9 hours. Going by this then yes you should try to get more sleep. On the other hand it is a good sign that you a rarely sick because you're body must be healthy and able to fight off germs. Usually if your body was tired and weak then you would get sick more often because your body would have a harder time fighting off things like the common cold. If you don't feel tired and you remain healthy like you said you do then I don't think you have to worry about it for right now. Some people are able to function on less sleep then others and some people require a lot more sleep then others!

there is on such genetic thing. If you did actually sleep for 9 hours like you were supposed to than you will feel a noticable difference. You just aren't used to of sleeping longer. At first it could be hard sleeping in and going to bed earlier.

welll i know someone who's never slept since he was 21. he was never tired, and didn't mind sleeping. then he died at the age of 45

so yeah i suggest you sleep

It is a good idea to sleep at least 7 hours a day because it will keep you healthy and more alert. I suggest trying to do that once just to see how much more alert you are the next day.

I learned in my health class that the average teen should get 9 hours of sleep per night. I personally am 16, but homeschooled, and get at least 9 hours of sleep per night. I go to bed usually around 1-2 am, and get up about....10-11am each day... If I dont get enough sleep , I act totally different than usually, I'm grouchy and snippy with everyone, no matter what they do....It's really not a pretty sight....If it works for you though, have at it! lol.

I think your dad needs to set a good example and go to sleep and tell you to get to sleep unless it is a weekend. You are setting up bad habits for life.

well you really are supposed to sleep 8-9 hours for your best performance. if you sleep aroud 3 hours every night and feel normal, imagine how great you'll feel after having 9 hours of sleep!

I had a sleep study done and i was told by the person and the doctor that most people require 8hrs per night which is also the recommended hrs medically but they also said there is some people who function better on 5hrs sleep and i happen to be one in the 5hr range...so you are not getting enough sleep on either of these recommended hrs...although with 5hrs there are times when i get ran down and i sleep longer maybe a night a wk or every other wk. i think it has to do with how we grew up sleeping i had a brother who was scared at night for some reason and either mom or i had to be awake until he was asleep even though i was a child i knew mom had to get up early and some nights she would beg him to let her sleep and to go to sleep himself and i finally told mom to sleep and i stayed awake with him and this went on for yrs from there i kept staying up because i was so use to going to sleep late and getting less now i am just the same way genetic no but i think it is to do with what our bodies get use to when we are younger.

Being tired and being sleepy are too different animals altogether lol. Insomnia is a treatable medical condition (perhaps also genetic). Decreased need and ability to sleep are not healthy. I suggest you and your dad go to your family doctor and see what he/she has to say. You are honestly not getting the recommended amount of sleep. You might not feel tired, however, improved sleep habits might improve your quality of life and function more than you think. Give it a try.

You're just not used to sleeping more. Try extending your sleep by one hour each night.
The first night, go to bed at 1 or 2.
Then second night, 12 or 1.
The third night, 11 or 12.

You'll notice a difference. :)

Good luck.

try this on a weekend: go to sleep when you are tired and don't set your alarm. whatever time you wake up naturally is how much sleep your body needs and how much you should be getting every night. i'd be willing to bet that you'd sleep more than four hours if you did this.

I think the others are wrong in saying that you do not get enough sleep. You are right that genetically some people do not need as much sleep. Everyone is saying that the average person/teenager needs 7 or 9 or however many hours of sleep, but the point is that is the AVERAGE teenager. There are outliers. Getting too much sleep can be bad too-it can leave you groggy and sluggish. The question is: if you went to bed at lets say 10, would you wake up at 2 in the morning because you cannot sleep longer than four hours? If so then yeah, I think you are getting enough sleep.

If you're feeling ok and it's not bothering you well i guess its ok but who knows you could feel even better if you got that extra sleep.

um, youre supposed to get more sleep.... i think, and you need to sleep cuz ur still growing, since ur 16
